2 UNIT POTW: The Bucs were fortunate to escape Week 1 with a win. Atlanta out gained them by nearly 100 yards, held a +6.7% net success rate, and missed a kick that would have forced overtime. Baker Mayfield finished with four turnover worthy plays but somehow didn’t record a single turnover. He got away with being reckless, but Houston’s defense won’t be so forgiving. The Texans defense is elite and capable of keeping them in every game this season. They finished last year 3rd in defensive DVOA and added C.J. Gardner-Johnson to strengthen the secondary even more. Meanwhile, the Bucs passing attack stumbled to a 52.9 grade in Week 1, second worst in the league. This is argely because of their offensive line issues. Tampa Bay is still without All-Pro Tristan Wirfs, and right tackle Luke Goedeke is questionable. Those are huge losses against a Houston pass rush that posted an 81.9 grade in Week 1, best in the league. The Texans ended 2024 fourth in the NFL with 49 sacks and should bring heavy pressure all night, forcing Mayfield into tough throws. Making matters worse for Tampa Bay, Chris Godwin is also out tonight. They’re also adjusting to life without last year’s offensive coordinator Liam Coen, now the Jaguars head coach. The offense already looked less potent in Week 1. Defensively, the Bucs are below average. They surrendered 341.8 yards per game last season, thanks in part to an underwhelming pass rush that ranked just 21st. The Texans offensive line is their biggest weakness, so going against a subpar pass rush is huge for Houston’s offensive success. CJ Stroud can pick apart a defense if he is given some time. Even without Tank Dell, Houston retooled its wide receiver room. They drafted Iowa State standouts Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel and traded for Christian Kirk, though Kirk is sidelined tonight. Still, the group around Nico Collins is much improved. The Texans Week 1 offensive stats look rough, but they came against an elite Rams pass rush. I expect far better production tonight. I’ll sell high on the 1-0 Bucs and back the 0-1 Texans at home. Best odds are on Draft Kings and Fan Duel, which are significantly lower than the rest of the market.

The Texans have a new OC in Nick Caley from the McVay tree, and he led them to the 9th lowest pass rate over expected on early downs in their Week 1 loss to the Rams. Houston had to shuffle the OL with RG Ed Ingram out (he’s back tonight) and trailed for half the game, which was not ideal for Chubb. Even in that setup he finished with 13 carries for 60 yards, looking much closer to his pre-injury form. He was the clear lead back in short yardage with Dameon Pierce and rookie Woody Marks mixing in. The Texans also faced the fewest 3rd downs in the league (9) and converted them at a league-low 22%. That is a brutal environment for Chubb since his best chance at carries comes on 1st downs or in 3rd and short situations. Despite that, he still reached 13 attempts. On their FG drive in the 2nd quarter, Chubb opened with 4 straight runs before being spelled, and the team ran 3 more times on that series while up just 6-0. That shows how run heavy they can be in neutral or leading scripts. Tonight that script is more likely. The Texans are 2.5-point favorites and have been drawing sharp action. Tampa Bay was fortunate last week with Baker Mayfield avoiding 1–2 likely interceptions, and their play style under new OC John Grizzard looks like one that will be in the lower half of the league in time of possession. That should give Houston extra plays and more opportunities for Chubb. I project him closer to 14.4 rush attempts with about a 67% chance to clear 12.5. I would still take Over 13.5 at +106, where I show about a 58% chance he clears.
