How to Start Sports Betting in Kansas: An Easy, 4-Step Guide

Step 1: Choose a Sportsbook

You’ll want to register with more than one sportsbook to rack up as many promos as possible and eventually, shop around for the best odds. New customers receive a Bet $5, Get $200 in Bonus Bets + $100 off NFL Sunday Ticket offer, so let’s start there.

Pro Tip: Online sportsbooks will literally pay for your business. Before registering with one, make sure to take advantage of their signup promos so you can earn bonus bets and site credit.

(Although FanDuel is our example, most of these steps can be reapplied for each app.)

Step 2: Sign Up

Create a new account at FanDuel and follow the prompts. Click Join Now, select Kansas and enter a username and password.

You may need to provide proof of identity, like a driver’s license and social security number. This prevents using fake names to create multiple accounts.

You may already have an account at FanDuel if you’ve played daily fantasy before. If so, log in.

Pro Tip: Use all your real information, even if you’re commuting from a nonlegal state like Missouri or Oklahoma to place bets. It’s completely legal to sign up to bet in Kansas while you’re inside state lines, even if you don’t live there.

Step 3: Deposit Money Online

Funding your account is simple.

You can deposit at FanDuel with the following:

  • Credit card
  • Bank account
  • PayPal
  • Wire transfer
  • And more…

Legal sportsbooks make you pay for your bets upfront. But don’t worry, you’ll get paid out fast, and withdrawing your money is just as easy as depositing it.

FanDuel will wire money right to your bank account at any time. Often, the money shows up in less than 24 hours. If you’ve been betting offshore, that’s a welcome change.

Step 4: Place Your First Bet

To bet, simply click on a line you like, and it will turn blue. Kansans can get in on season-long bets that’ll be taken off the board once NFL games start, like the Kansas City Chiefs’ win total or Patrick Mahomes to lead the NFL in passing yards.

Once it’s highlighted, the bet will populate your bet slip. That will be on the right side of your screen on your desktop, and in the middle of the bottom menu on your phone. Congratulations, you've placed your first bet!

Kansas Sports Betting Overview, Timeline and Background

Kansas sports betting was officially legalized as of May 11, 2022, after Gov. Laura Kelly gave her seal of approval. In-person and mobile sports betting officially went live in Kansas on Sept. 1.

Kansas allows three online licenses for each of the state's four casinos. Just in time for NFL and college football, Kansans can place a bet online through FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, Barstool and PointsBet. The full launch took place Sept. 8 when Bally Bet, FOX Bet and Golden Nugget — a DraftKings-owned sportsbook — joined the online market.

In-person betting is available at the Hollywood Casino Barstool Sportsbook in Kansas City and the Kansas Star Casino FanDuel Sportsbook in Mulvane. Boot Hill Casino and Resort in Dodge City (DraftKings) and Kansas Crossing Casino in Pittsburgh (Caesars) will take in-person bets as well, though they haven't announced when they'll start.

Kansas was the quickest state turnaround from legal sports betting being signed into law to launching. Once legal betting goes live, it will have been only 74 days between bill signage and the go-live date. Iowa held the previous quickest turnaround at 95 days, and Arizona, formerly the second fastest, needed 148 days.

Betting on Kansas colleges will be allowed under the bill, and the minimum age to bet is set at 21.

Online and retail sports betting will be taxed at a 10% rate. Operators may exclude revenue tied to promotions and bonus play from their taxable income, which is a big victory for the industry. It's expected to generate roughly $10 million a year for the state, which waged a political battle earlier this year with Missouri to legalize sports betting first.

Kansas' Rivalry with Missouri

Lawmakers from Kansas and Missouri have openly competed to pass legal sports betting first, and now Kansas can claim the victory.

Kansas Rep. Stephanie Clayton told the Action Network that Missouri’s efforts legalize was a driving factor in Kansas' efforts to legalize sports betting. Bill sponsor Rep. Dan Houx added additional context, saying that the rivalry aided the bill in garnering more votes in the Senate. The bill ended up passing by just one vote.

Missouri at one point looked to have the advantage in legalizing sports betting first, but its proposal went up in flames in late April following an hours-long filibuster over a provision to legalize video lottery terminals. It was another failed effort for Missouri which, like Kansas, has attempted to legalize sports betting for years. Missouri’s bill would have given the Kansas City Chiefs a mobile betting license, which will not have to wait.

Kansas joins Colorado and Nebraska in legalizing sports betting. Missouri is surrounded by five legal states with Kentucky as its only non-legal neighbor.

Kansas' Legalization Timeline

Here are some of the important events along the way that got us to legal sports betting in Kansas:

September 2022

In-person and mobile sports betting officially is live in Kansas as of noon CST on Sept. 1. Six sportsbooks (FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, Barstool and PointsBet) launch during Kansas' soft-launch period on Sept. 1, and additional sportsbooks (Bally Bet, FOX Bet and Golden Nugget) launched on Sept. 8.

August 2022

The Kansas Lottery resubmitted revised sports betting rules and regulations on Aug. 22, following concerns made public by Kansas Attorney General's Office. Those issues, spelled out in a letter, ranged from advertising restrictions to the Lottery's definitions of "vulnerable persons" and "sports governing body." It's "an ordinary course of business," according to Cory Thune, a spokesperson for the Kansas Lottery, who said the Lottery is confident any potential issues will be worked out in time for the "Sept. 1 soft launch date."

Kansas announces sports betting will go live on Sept. 1 at noon. The expected launch date comes just 113 days after Gov. Laura Kelly signed off on legalizing sports betting.

May 2022

Gov. Laura Kelly signs SB 84 into law on May 11, 2022, helping KS become the 35th state to legalize sports betting. In addition to retail sports betting, the bill includes adding up to 12 sportsbooks to the Sunflower State's market. There is an expectation that sports wagering will officially be ready to launch in time for the 2022 NFL season or later when other leagues begin their seasons.

April 2022

Kansas officially beats its Missouri rival in legalizing sports betting first. The Kansas Senate voted 21-13 to legalize online and retail sports betting under a 10% tax.

The Kansas legislature is expected to approve online sports betting after the House passes a bill pre-negotiated with their Senate counterparts. The Senate holds their vote afterward, but passage appears promising.

The border state rivalry between Kansas and Missouri motivates lawmakers in both states to legalize sports betting faster than the other.

March 2022

The Kansas House passes HB 2740 by a 88-36 vote to legalize online and retail betting in Kansas.

Legislators introduce HB 2740. It has backing from the state's House committee and has a solid shot at getting to Gov. Laura Kelly. Kelly has been against making sports betting legal in the past, but with times changing, things could be different once the bill reaches her hands. Look for 2023 as a potential legalization time period.

2021

The bill fails to pass in the House, which pushed its own bill that would extend sports betting access to hundreds of lottery retailers (such as convenience stores) throughout the state.

Kansas introduces a sports betting bill introduced in the state Senate. The proposal would allow each of the state’s four commercial casinos to open a retail sportsbook at their facilities and partner with up to three online providers each. The state’s Native American gaming tribes could also renegotiate their government compacts to offer sports betting as well.

Latest Sports News in Kansas:

  • In their Week 3 victory at Arrowhead, the Kansas City Chiefs quickly handled the Chicago Bears, with quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid orchestrating the Chiefs' first impressive offensive display of 2023 against opposing quarterback Justin Fields and head coach Matt Eberflus. (9/25)
  • The Royals completed a sweep against the Astros with a 6-5 victory. Despite a rocky start, they rallied with four home runs in the second and third innings. This win guarantees they won't lose more than 108 games and hinders the Astros' playoff aspirations, marking the end of the Royals' influence on the 2023 postseason. (9/25)

What to Keep an Eye on:

  • The Chiefs appear to be struggling, compounded by a minor quarterback situation. The Chiefs have an impressive 6-1 ATS record in their last seven matchups against the Jets. As the Jets gear up for a home game against the defending Super Bowl champions, the Sunday Night Football contest seems poised to be a challenging one for them on the national stage.  (9/25)
  • The Royals are set to begin a 3-game series against the Tigers on Tuesday at The Comercia Park and will conclude their season by hosting the Yankees at home. (9/25)

The Kansas City Chiefs have entered a multi-year agreement to make BetMGM an official sports betting sponsor. Under the partnership, the Chiefs will place BetMGM signage around Arrowhead Stadium and feature its branded betting content across their digital channels.

The Chiefs are highly regarded as one of the best teams in the NFL since QB Patrick Mahomes became an official starter five years ago. Since then, the Chiefs have reached between the Conference Championship game and the Super Bowl each season, winning two titles during that span. Mahomes, Darrel Williams, Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill will continue to dominate the AFC West for years to come. The Chiefs are coached by Andy Reid and play home games at the GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Royals have unfortunately been on a downward trend since winning back-to-back AL Pennants and winning their second World Series title eight years ago. Kansas City hasn’t had a winning record in the following seven seasons (counting 2022) and seems to be starting their rebuild after trading Andrew Benintendi before last season's Trade Deadline. The Royals play at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, MO, and are led by their manager, Mike Matheny.

Sporting KC has been in the MLS for 26 years, producing 15 winning seasons in that span. Inconsistency has affected the club throughout its history as the last time they finished first was at the turn of the 21st century. With goalkeeper Tim Melia and forwards Dániel Sallói and Johnny Russell leading the way, hopefully, the club can find some success with their manager, Peter Vermes. Sporting KC plays its home games at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, MO.
