How Indiana Sports Betting Compares: The Sports Betting Report Card
We graded Indiana on its sports betting bill and experience relative to other states.
Indiana followed the New Jersey model and got just about everything right when it comes to online sports betting. The Hoosier state chose wisely for the most part: mobile-forward, accessible online deposits, and decent pricing. We just wish they didn’t limit player props on college sports and constrain live betting to commercial breaks.
Mobile Betting Options
Indiana has full online betting. You need to be within the state’s borders to wager. Operators in the Hoosier State took almost $1 billion in bets in their first eight months, and it generated nearly $7 million in revenue for the state. To generate meaningful revenue, states need fully online betting. Indiana got that right.
Deposit
Indiana bettors can sign up and deposit online. That’s a huge advantage since it removes most of the friction if you want multiple sportsbook accounts.
Fair Pricing
Getting the best pricing requires lots of sportsbooks in a state. And Indiana did pretty much everything it could to attract the big operators. While books do need to partner with a land-based operator to offer online sports betting, there are 14 total casinos, so there shouldn’t be a shortage of relationships. And the fees to enter are just $100,000 with a $50,000 per year renewal, plus a reasonable 9.5% tax rate. We should see more and more books in Indiana over the next year, which will lead to great pricing for bettors.
Offerings
Just about every bet type is available in Indiana. The state’s gaming commission published a list of all event types, and it’s about what you’d expect. You can bet on college teams based in the state, which you can’t in New Jersey. What can’t you gamble on in Indiana? It sounds like a small thing, but the power of live betting opens up when you can get action down at any time and don’t have to wait until breaks. The Indiana Gaming Commission controls the data sources available and lives betting rules. No college player props are unfortunate for anyone trying to start out making their own projections and beat an exploitable market. Indiana’s failure to legalize online casinos and poker is also a miss. New Jersey and Pennsylvania have seen massive handles and revenue from poker and online gaming, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic without sports.
- Live betting is limited to “natural” breaks, like commercials or the end of a quarter or inning
- No college player proposition betting
- No casino or online poker

Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football
From the iconic golden-dome helmets to the larger-than-life Touchdown Jesus mural overlooking Notre Dame Stadium, the university is steeped in rich tradition and football history. Players slap the Play Like a Champion Today sign as they exit the locker room and head out onto the field where "Rudy" made his name in the eponymous movie.
Notre Dame football competes as an independent, free of conference loyalty, though it normally plays five games a year against ACC opponents. The university claims 11 national championships but is recognized by the NCAA and other selectors with as many as 22, tied for most all-time. Notre Dame players have won the Heisman Trophy seven times, tied for most of any university. Notre Dame has produced over 100 consensus All-Americans and nearly 500 players selected in the NFL Draft.
The Irish have one of the largest and most widespread fan bases in football. NBC has televised all Notre Dame home games since 1991, and the university has a number of longtime rivalries.
Indiana Hoosiers Football
The Hoosiers play in the Big Ten, where they've won the conference championship twice, in 1945 and 1967. Indiana has played in 11 bowl games, including the 1968 Rose Bowl. The Hoosiers play their games at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington. Tom Allen coaches them.
Purdue Boilermakers Football
The Boilermakers compete in the Big Ten and rank in the top 50 for most wins by an NCAA FBS program. Purdue has competed at the FBS level since reclassifying in 1978. The Boilermakers have 12 conference championships, eight of them in the Big Ten. Purdue plays at Ross-Ade Stadium on campus in West Lafayette. Jeff Brohm coaches them.
Ball State Cardinals Football
Ball State plays its home games at Scheumann Stadium on campus in Muncie, Indiana. The Cardinals competed in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and joined what is now called the FBS level of football in 1981. Ball State has played in seven bowl games without a win. Mike Neu coaches them.

College Basketball Betting in Indiana
Notre Dame Fighting Irish Men's Basketball
The Irish play their home games in the Purcell Pavilion at the Edmund P. Joyce Center in South Bend, Indiana. Notre Dame plays in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in basketball and has appeared in the NCAA Tournament times, top 10 all-time and most for any team without appearing in a championship game, with a lone Final Four bid in 1978. The Fighting Irish have been led by coach Mike Brey every year this century.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish Women's Basketball
Notre Dame's women's basketball team has recently risen to national prominence at the highest level. The Irish have made nine Final Fours, including seven over the past decade, and won national championships in 2001 and 2018. Notre Dame has become a fixture on Championship Monday, playing in six national championship games over the past decade under legendary head coach Muffet McGraw. The Irish will now begin a new era with McGraw retiring in spring 2020, leaving the reins to Niele Ivy.
Indiana Hoosiers Men's Basketball
The Hoosiers are one of the nation's elite college basketball programs with five national championships. They won the first two in 1940 and 1953 under Branch McCracken and the other three in 1976, 1981, and 1987 with Bob Knight. That legendary 1976 team never lost a game and remained the most recent unbeaten Division I men's basketball champion.
The Hoosiers play in the Big Ten, where they've won 22 conference championships. They have appeared in eight Final Fours and rank top seven in NCAA tournament appearances and victories. Indiana plays its home games at Simon Skojdt Assembly Hall in Bloomington, where IU annually boasts one of college basketball's best attendance records.
Indiana last made the national championship game in 2002 but has not been back to the Elite Eight since. Archie Miller coaches the Hoosiers.
Purdue Boilermakers Men's Basketball
The Boilermakers play in the Big Ten and have the most conference championships of any Big Ten team with 24. Purdue has appeared in 31 NCAA Tournaments, making two Finals Fours in 1969 and 1980. Purdue plays its home games at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette.
Matt Painter has coached the Boilermakers for the better part of two decades. Purdue is the home of two former No. 1 NBA Draft picks, Glenn Robinson and Joe Barry Carroll.
Butler Bulldogs Men's Basketball
Butler basketball is a program on the rise over the past 25 years. Butler has competed in the NCAA tournament in all but three seasons since 1997, despite playing in a mid-major conference for most of them. The Bulldogs made a memorable Cinderella run to the national championship in 2010, then returned the following year but lost both times. Butler is the smallest school to play for the NCAA national championship in the modern tournament era.
Butler plays in the Big East Conference. They are the only Indiana team in a basketball-crazed state to ever play in back-to-back national championship games. The Bulldogs play their home games in the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. LaVall Jordan coaches them.
Ball State Cardinals Men's Basketball
The Cardinals play in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and have won their conference seven times. Ball State has appeared in seven NCAA tournaments, most recently in 2000. The Cardinals have three March Madness wins, including a memorable run to the Sweet Sixteen in 1990 as a 12-seed before losing to eventual champion UNLV by two points. They also memorably upset No. 4 Kansas and No. 3 UCLA on consecutive days in the 2001 Maui Invitational Tournament. James Whitford coaches Ball State.
