This prop feels a bit high for Lopez’s Opening Day start for a few reasons. He’s a finesse lefty whose fastball sits around 90-91, but he does a great job keeping hitters off balance. That’s why his K rate tends to hold steady the second and third time through the order. Because of that, a lower pitch count hurts him more than the average pitcher. The matchup doesn’t help either. The Braves’ projected lineup is the 7th toughest to strike out based on my projections, and having a low K bat like Dubon in there this year only reinforces that. They’re also an aggressive lineup that swings at a high rate, which makes this a slightly tougher matchup for a pitcher like Lopez who relies more on getting hitters to take strikes. Fewer called strikes means fewer easy paths to Ks. That said, the 4-6 hitters are clearly his best stretch to rack up Ks. I have him getting pulled right before seeing that pocket a third time. Maybe they let him face Olson again for the lefty-lefty matchup, but I’d expect him to get pulled before Riley, which caps his upside. He does have a solid floor, and exactly 5 Ks is his most likely outcome at around 20%, but there are a few subtle factors here that limit his chances of getting to 6+.
