Tigers vs. Padres Odds & Betting Predictions - March 26, 2026

Skubal is the best pitcher in baseball. I’m not fading the talent, I’m fading the matchup on Opening Day. A few layers here. First, Skubal is historically a slow starter. His March/April K rate is 2-3% lower than his seasonal average. Early in the year, he’s not the 32% K rate monster he becomes until after a couple of starts usually. Second, this Padres lineup is tough to strike out against lefties and I project it as the 2nd lowest K rate vs lefties on the entire Opening Day slate (which is impressive considering they don’t have Luis Arraez anymore). Third, the plate discipline profile. The Padres have the highest projected swing rate on the slate at 50% and the 2nd highest chase rate at 30%. Sounds like it should help a K pitcher, but their whiff rate is expected to below league average. They swing a ton and still make contact. Their projected contact rate on chases is 56%, which is above league average. They’ll chase Skubal’s changeup below the zone, but foul it off or put it in play than your average team. And his fastball, the pitch he uses to set everything up, is a problem here too. This lineup whiffs on four-seamers 2.6% below league average, so they’re putting his setup pitch in play. Fourth, the Padres are running three lefties today. That’s 33% lefties compared to the ~20% he typically faced last year. More same-handed matchups where his K rate dips (he has reverse platoon splits). I’m projecting him to stay under 7.5 around 65% of the time

Good price with Skubal too. Pivetta was horrible in Spring, too. Gonna fade him here

Pivetta a regression candidate however he is still lights out at home(Very pitcher friendly park), then Skubal obviously with 2 elite bullpens(Tigers bp not necessarily elite but backend guys are great which is all we should need here). Don’t really get the #. I’d play to u7 -110 for full 1.5U risk and to u6.5 -105 for 1U
