Logan Gilbert is a certified ace with a ton of K upside. He has one of the best putaway pitches in the league with his splitter (50% whiff rate), and he pitches in T-Mobile Park, which consistently ranks near the top in K park factors. That said, a couple things are working against him on Opening Night. First, the pitch count. That’s obvious, but it matters more here than people realize. Gilbert has a fairly standard drop-off in K rate the second time through the order, but interestingly, his K rate actually jumps back up the third time through. That’s not common, and it speaks to how effective his pitch mix is, even after hitters have seen him twice and fatigue starts to set in. With a limited pitch count, though, he’s less likely to get deep enough into the lineup a third time. I have him getting pulled right around Bo Naylor’s third plate appearance. That’s important because the top four hitters project for just an 18.3% K rate against him the third time through, while the bottom five are up at 30.3%. That’s the chunk of the lineup he’s most likely to miss, which quietly drags down his overall K expectation. It’s also a Guardians lineup that projects for the highest chase contact rate on the slate. That will come down a ton against Gilbert, but it still shows they tend to make contact even when swinging at pitches out of the zone. On top of that, they have a whiff rate 2-3% below league average against fastballs, so they should do a decent job avoiding getting to two strike counts. I’m projecting him to stay under 6.5 Ks around 62% of the time.
