Blake Snell may be my favorite pitcher in MLB. Not only is his stuff nasty, but he’s also a seasoned veteran who’s been in this spot plenty of times before. Sure, he wasn’t great in Game 1 of the World Series, but there aren’t many pitchers I trust more than Snell. He posted a 2.35 ERA this season with a 2.43 FIP, and in the playoffs he’s been just as sharp with a 2.42 ERA, 2.21 FIP, 2.54 xFIP, and 2.38 SIERA. Snell’s biggest issue throughout his career has been walks, but this season he’s posted the best Location+ grade of his career (112). When Snell isn’t giving out free passes, he’s nearly impossible to beat. He owns an elite 35.6% whiff rate and a 33.9% chase rate, while also limiting hard contact (34%) and keeping the ball on the ground 50.6% of the time. The Blue Jays offense is solid, but they’ll likely be without George Springer, one of their best bats all season. On the other side, Trey Yesavage is a great talent, but this is a really tough spot for him. It’s important to remember he’s still new to MLB and this will be just his eighth start of the year. In his two road starts during the regular season, he posted a 5.00 ERA across 9 innings. While he’s looked good in the playoffs, he hasn’t pitched on the road yet. Dodger Stadium is usually an unforgiving place to pitch, ranking 5th in home runs allowed and 4th in overall run factor this season. The Dodgers have been the best offense in baseball at home with a 125 wRC+. Yesavage’s advanced metrics also raise some red flags. He has a .262 xBA and a 11.3% walk rate. This is not a good scenario against a Dodgers team that ranked second in walk rate this season. Yesavage walked 3 Dodgers in Game 1, but luckily escaped without more damage. He also has a concerning 61.5% hard-hit rate, which would be among the worst in MLB if he was qualified. Don’t get me wrong, Yesavage is a very good pitcher, but this is an almost impossible spot to succeed. I trust Snell to be Snell, and I trust the Dodgers offense to get something going after last night’s dud.
