Notably, Smith's success in elevating an Oregon State program that had become a constant struggler into a never-say-die winner stands to date as his best achievement. Getting Aidan Chiles at quarterback and Tanner Miller and Andrew Dennis on the offensive line added some important talent up front, which could really make a difference against an FAU team that lacks much depth or proven talent. Meanwhile, FAU still searches for its identity with second-year coach Tom Herman. One big red flag is that the Owls are a vastly inconsistent team, even more so when traveling. They have lost 20 of their last 21 road games against non-conference foes, which indicates an inability to play on the road. The Owls have also failed to cover in each of their last four games, which demonstrates how they can be easily taken apart in games in which they are clearly outmanned in terms of talent. Steady returning guys on defense, with guys like Cal Haladay and Jordan Hall, are steady against an FAU offense still searching for its identity. While FAU did bring in transfers at skill positions, there is going to be a lack of continuity and proven production that's ultimately going to make keeping up with the Spartans hard on them. FAU's defense doesn't hang in high regard, either, against a Big Ten team that certainly has its questions but has the physicality and depth to dominate the line of scrimmage. There's even more confidence in this pick, as Michigan State is 5-1 against the spread in their last six non-conference games at Spartan Stadium. They also tend to cover as double-digit favorites, going 6-2 ATS in that spot in their last eight attempts. In games against lesser competition, the Spartans perform better than expected.
