Let’s start with the basics of this game. The 76ers will come into this game off a 3-1 comeback series win against a big rival in which they won on the road in a Game 7. That is about as heightened of emotions as you can possibly get. On the other hand, the Knicks have had four full days of rest after annihilating Atlanta in Game 6. Philly has to be tired after playing three games in five days and this now turns into a big time letdown spot after their emotional high in Boston. The 76ers legs will be heavier tonight whether they want to admit it or not. I am now seeing people overreact to the 76ers winning that series against the Celtics. The truth is the Celtics played themselves out of the series and had essentially no depth. They went dead cold from deep and Jayson Tatum was unavailable for Game 7. It would be Celtics vs Knicks in the second round if Tatum played, so let’s not overreact too much to Philly advancing. I will admit, I have not been a 76ers believer all season and I was largely right. We have had good success going against this team as they are continually overvalued in the market. I think this spot makes too much sense for New York. After the Knicks went down 2-1 to Atlanta they really turned it on, winning the next three games by 16, 29, and 51 points. That Atlanta team is no slouch either, so I was impressed with how well the Knicks were able to control momentum and leave no doubt in the series. The 76ers have also been prone to blowouts, losing by 32 in two of their three losses to Boston. Philadelphia is a super inconsistent team and the Knicks don’t have to rely on the three ball like the Celtics did. It’s much harder for the Knicks’ balanced offense to go cold. The Knicks have also been elite at home this season, going 30-10 at the Garden. The Knicks are a completely different team when at home, almost 4 points better spread wise. Our model has the fair spread for tonight’s game at Knicks -9.2. I think we see a potential blowout against a tired 76ers team. Give me the Knicks to cover in Game 1.
