Fading Chris Sale is never for the faint of heart. He’s still one of the elite strikeout artists of this era, with a lethal 4-seam/slider combo that remains dominant at age 36. His slider carries a 42% whiff rate, and the market is never confused about his strikeout upside. That said, I think there’s sneaky value on the under here. The Brewers have the 10th-lowest whiff rate against sliders, which could help them counter his best pitch better than most teams. Sale also racks up Ks by getting hitters to chase unhittable pitches — he has a 34% chase rate and allows just 44% contact on swings outside the zone. The Brewers have the 3rd-lowest chase rate in the league, which could help them lay off his bait more than most. And having high-contact bats like Sal Frelick and Caleb Durbin — who isn’t always in the lineup but is today, and is one of the best contact hitters in baseball — could be just enough to slow him down. He should still do damage against the 3–5 hitters, but I’m projecting his most likely outcome at 7 Ks and make it closer to -150 that he stays under 7.5.
