We close the 2023 NFL preseason by making a Texans vs. Saints pick on Sunday night

The Saints (2-0) are looking to close out an undefeated preseason campaign against C.J. Stroud and the Texans (1-1). This is the last NFL action until the Lions and Chiefs kick off the NFL regular season on Sept. 7.

Let's break down the Texans vs. Saints odds to find our betting pick.

Texans vs. Saints

Matchup Analysis

Saints head coach Dennis Allen announced that Derek Carr will not play in the preseason finale. That means more of Jameis Winston and Jake Haener at quarterback for the Saints.

Haener is someone I was incredibly high on in this year’s draft class, and he has performed well in the preseason. This will be a great chance for both quarterbacks to prove themselves.

For the Texans, rookie C.J. Stroud has still not been named the Week 1 starter. Last year’s starter, Davis Mills, has been very solid and probably has a small edge over Stroud at the moment. These quarterbacks still have a lot to play for in the final exhibition game.

For the Saints, rookie running back Kendre Miller had a great game last week. I expect him to get even more touches as the Saints continue to ramp him up. I think that can only mean good things for the Saints given the Texans defense ranked last against the run last season.

Overall, New Orleans has the better roster. In a game where we should see more starters than any other preseason game, the Saints have the natural edge. They finished the 2022 season 19th in overall team DVOA while the Texans were 31st.

Despite Carr's absence, I think the QB rooms are about equal in this game as well. Mills and Winston are comparable at the moment and the two rookies behind them are also pretty level, based on what we have seen so far.

Betting Picks & Predictions

With a coin flip at the quarterback position, the better roster should find a way to win this game.

This line was -2.5, but action is coming in on Houston, likely because of the Carr news, but I think the Saints have the edge. I would bet New Orleans up to -3.
