Walker has settled in as a 16.5% K type of guy over the past few seasons, and based on his spring, it doesn’t look like he’s trying to change that heading into his age-33 season. He still lacks a true putaway pitch. The one thing he does well is get hitters to take strikes at an above-average rate, but that’s one of the least reliable ways to sustain a K rate. The Nationals’ K% is around league average so far, but I still have today’s projected lineup as the 5th toughest to strike out on the slate. They’ve been fairly aggressive, swinging at the 9th highest rate this season, which is actually helpful here since it makes it tougher for Walker to rack up Ks. From a workload standpoint, there are concerns too. Walker threw just 60 pitches in his last spring start on 3/15 and struck out only 3 hitters on 64 pitches against Brazil in the WBC. It’s hard to project him for 80+ pitches in his first start. The one plus is that the Nationals are leading off their highest K% hitter in James Wood, so Walker should get to face his top strikeout matchup three times. Still, he’ll likely get pulled around the 2-3 hitters the third time through and probably won’t make it to Brady House (2nd best hitter for him to K), who’s projected to hit 5th. Even if he squeezes in an extra hitter or two, it doesn’t move the needle much against a lineup that’s tough to strike out. I’m projecting the under closer to -155.

(FD) Not sure what Foster Griffin is, but he looked okay in ST and projects around four. I do know who Taijuan Walker is (4.79 SIERA/4.58 xERA LY). Wouldn't dip below +150.
