Sale has been one of the top strikeout artists of this era, with arguably one of the best strikeout pitches of this era in his slider, but both are finally starting to show slight signs of decline in his age-37 season. His overall whiff rate is currently at its lowest point since 2016, while his slider specifically has seen around a 5% drop in whiff rate. He’s also nearly tripled his sinker usage this year, another subtle sign he may not be relying on overpowering hitters quite as much anymore. My expected K model has him closer to a 24.5% K rate so far due to a handful of smaller red flags. Today’s Dodgers lineup is also quietly tougher to strike out toward the bottom of the order than people realize. Guys like Rojas and Espinal are very tough Ks, so even if Sale’s pitch count is running efficiently and he gets to face a couple extra hitters, it doesn’t really raise his ceiling all that much. Fading Sale is never fun and anytime the Dodgers get into a 2-strike count tonight you can find me hyperventilating into a paper bag. But I’m projecting him closer to -135 to stay under 6.5, so getting plus money is a nice bonus.
