Several NBA teams are adjusting to their new rosters and rotations post-deadline. The Timberwolves can be counted in that group after effectively swapping D’Angelo Russell for Mike Conley.
While this leaves Anthony Edwards as the unquestioned alpha of this offense (especially with Karl-Anthony Towns still on the shelf), his points, rebounds and assists (PRA) line remains too high in a tough matchup against the Clippers.
Since the Russell trade, Edwards has cleared this line in three of his six games. However, he struggled in games against the Grizzlies and Warriors (in San Francisco), both of whom excel on the defensive end. In fact, earlier this season, Edwards put up a 19/7/3 line against the Clippers with both Russell and KAT inactive.
The Clippers are a brutal matchup for Edwards because they allow the fewest combined PRA to wings (shooting guards and small forwards) this season. Between Kawhi Leonard, Paul Goerge and the likes of Terance Mann off the bench, the Clippers have a slew of plus-defenders to throw at Ant Man.
Additionally, the Clippers love to bring down the pace, playing at the seventh-slowest tempo in the NBA.
It’s a tough matchup for Edwards, who’d likely need an ultra-efficient game against Ty Lue’s defensive schemes. Even with his added volume and usage, I have Edwards projected at 35 PRA and would play this down to 37.5.
