The Dallas Mavericks haven't had the cleanest track record all year, particularly at home, and they enter a big matchup against the Phoenix Suns on the back of four losses in their last six games.
Will the surging Suns keep up their impressive play and earn a win in Dallas as road favorites?
Let's dive into the Suns vs Mavericks odds and make a pick in our Wednesday night NBA betting preview.
Suns vs Mavericks Prediction
Pick: Suns -2.5 (-110)
Finally healthy and building chemistry, the Suns have kicked it into full gear over the last week or so.
They've won six games in a row, most of which have come against quality opponents. Over that period of time, they've not only seen their offense tick up a hair but have played excellent defense in what's been a sharp turnaround from what we've seen all season.
Their numbers are up across the board, but most important of all regarding this matchup, Phoenix's poor 3-point defense has seen a marked improvement in recent weeks. It has always done a bang-up job defending in the midrange, which is ironically where it's most dangerous on the offensive end.
And while its rebounding has remained strong thanks to the efforts of Jusuf Nurkic, this team is finally defending the rim at a great clip this month for the first time in nearly two years.
The Suns' efforts on defense will be the storyline to watch here, particularly given that Dallas has built its offense around scoring from outside.
While Phoenix has been fortunate to run into some teams that don't shoot the best from deep, it was certainly an achievement to hold the Pelicans to just 23% shooting from 3 a few games back and a big deal to quiet a high-octane Pacers offense despite decent numbers from outside.
This Suns defense is rounding into form, and I expect it to be on full display in this matchup.
Unlike their counterparts here, the Mavericks are quite a mess at the moment.
Luka Doncic has been in and out of the lineup in the past month as he works his back to 100%, and despite a smattering of wins without him, there's been a clear drop-off in offensive production.
He once again enters this contest as questionable, and to make matters worse, it seems Kyrie Irving and Seth Curry are in danger of missing this game, as well.
Dante Exum is trending toward a return after missing the last nine games, but even if he does wind up being elevated to active, he surely can't be relied upon to play big minutes.
With those four injuries in the backcourt, this Mavericks offense is certainly in a perilous spot. As we noted above, they've really thrived from the outside, and all four of those players are the main reason why.
Dallas finds itself ranked just 20th in offensive efficiency over the last 10 games and will run into a defense trending upward.
The Mavericks may be a slightly profitable team for bettors to this point in the season, but they're just 8-10 against the spread as underdogs.
On the flip side, while the Suns have been a nightmare for their backers, their best spot — without a doubt — has been on the road, where they're 8-9-1 ATS.
Phoenix's improvements on the defensive end over the last few weeks have been impressive, and this is in an excellent spot here against a Dallas team that's down shooters and will need to shoot the 3 with great efficiency.
It certainly seems unlikely that the Mavericks' four injured guards all suit up for this one, and if they're down Doncic, this matchup should certainly be difficult for the home team to turn in their favor.
I expect a depleted Mavericks backcourt and a slumping offense to struggle at home against the red-hot Suns.
