The Rio Grande Rivalry is always tight. It’s been within this point spread in 9 of the last 10 years. And to catch everyone up, we thought this would be a down year for both the Aggies and Lobos. But State is 2-1 with wins over Bryant and Tulsa. And New Mexico is 2-1 with a decent showing at MIchigan, a ten point win over FCS Idaho State and a shocking 25-point beatdown of UCLA. But I think this UCLA win is throwing power rankings out of whack. UCLA no-showed that game, fired their coach post game. New Mexico is well coached, they have a hard-nosed rushing identity, they don’t put too much on Jack Layne’s shoulders. But there’s metrics here that worry me greatly with the Lobos as a nearly two touchdown favorite. Outside the top 100 in explosiveness, rushing success rate, and their defense creates little to no HAVOC (132nd). Gimme the road Aggies and an average Logan Fife to keep it within the number.
