Big Ten play for the Michigan Wolverines tips off on Tuesday as it hosts the Indiana Hoosiers at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
The Michigan football team is flying high as the top-ranked squad in the College Football Playoff, but the basketball team is trying to get its season back on track after starting 4-4.
Indiana already has one conference win in the bag against Maryland, and the Hoosiers are seeking their fourth straight win against the Wolverines since 2022.
The Hoosiers have won six of their first seven games, but the first five victories didn’t come over any substantial opponents.
However, Indiana’s best performance of the season came against Maryland in Friday’s Big Ten opener at Assembly Hall.
The Hoosiers easily covered as 2.5-point home favorites, as they built a 12-point halftime advantage and led by as many as 23 points in the second half. Maryland was held to 2-of-16 shooting from 3-point range, and Kel’el Ware paced the Hoosiers with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Mike Woodson’s team began the season failing to cover its first five games, which included a 20-point loss to defending champion UConn at Madison Square Garden.
Indiana finally cashed in its sixth game of the season, an 89-76 victory over Harvard in Indianapolis as 6.5-point favorites.
The Hoosiers have played three neutral-site games this season, but they have yet to play a true road contest. Last season in Big Ten play, Indiana lost six of 10 road games, but one of those victories came in Ann Arbor as a three-point underdog, 62-61.
The two wins for Indiana last season against Michigan came by a combined three points, which includes a two-point overtime victory back in Bloomington.
The Wolverines got off to a promising 3-0 start, but things have gone backwards of late, with losses in four of their last five games.
With the exception of a home upset loss to Long Beach State as 15-point favorites, the three other defeats during this stretch have come to teams in the top 55 of KenPom (Memphis, Texas Tech, Oregon).
The most recent defeat was a complete heartbreaker for Michigan, which lost on a go-ahead 3-pointer in the final seconds of overtime at Oregon.
Dug McDaniel put up a career-high 33 points for Michigan, including knocking down seven 3-pointers in the loss. Oregon hit 10-of-16 3-point attempts, as the Wolverines are allowing opponents to shoot 39% from downtown, which ranks 342nd in the nation.
Michigan has lost outright as a favorite three times this season, with the only home defeat in this role coming to Long Beach State.
Last season, the Wolverines excelled as a home favorite against conference foes, going 7-1 SU and 6-2 ATS. Of course, the only loss in this role came to Indiana, in a game which easily finished under the total of 145.
Indiana vs. Michigan
Betting Pick & Prediction
In Michigan's past 16 games in the favorite role since last season, the Wolverines have won 11 times and covered 10 times. So basically, the point spread hasn't mattered much in those games — it's either an outright Michigan win or loss.
Indiana grabbed a big win over Maryland in the conference opener, so there's no real desperation for the Hoosiers here.
Let's lay the 5.5 points with Michigan and play it up to -6.5.
Pick: Michigan -5.5 (Play to -6.5)
