49ers vs Seahawks Preview
The 2025-26 NFL season is shaping up as The Year of the Coach.
Not only do we have a Divisional Round littered with a who's who of the league's best coaches — Kyle Shanahan, Mike Macdonald, Sean Payton, Sean McDermott, Sean McVay, Ben Johnson, Mike Vrabel, DeMeco Ryans — but we also had two coaches whom many would consider worthy of being on that list fired effectively for not leading their team quite this far (Mike Tomlin, Jim Harbaugh). Fittingly, this game may well come down to Macdonald vs. Shanahan.
Despite appearing to be overmatched and undermanned heading into last week's Wild Card matchup against the Eagles, the 49ers were able to squeak by 23-19, with Shanahan's impact being felt in a big way on multiple scoring drives.
Shanahan scripted a masterful opening drive that featured a 61-yard Brock Purdy completion to Demarcus Robinson and ended with a Robinson touchdown. Then later, Shanahan dialed up a trick play that resulted in a Jauan Jennings touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey. Sixty-one yard catches and wide receiver touchdown passes are low-probability outcomes that would be tough to repeat regardless of the circumstances, but especially so against a Seahawks squad that finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in defensive DVOA, as well as No. 1 in DVOA versus both the run and pass.
In two matchups with Macdonald's defense this season, Shanahan's offense has averaged 10.0 points and 278.5 total yards. McCaffrey ran for a combined 92 yards on 30 carries — a 3.1 yard-per-carry average. Purdy had more interceptions (3) than touchdown passes (2). Jauan Jennings had 51 scoreless yards on 11 targets — not even surprising when considering Seattle also ranked No. 1 in DVOA versus opposing No. 1 wide receivers.
Of course, Macdonald's job is made easier by having talents like rookie second-round safety Nick Emmanwori, whom Macdonald uses in a variety of ways similar to Kyle Hamilton with the Ravens.
Speaking of which, Macdonald's success against Shanahan dates back to his days as defensive coordinator of the Ravens. In December of 2023, Purdy had the only four-interception game of his career against Macdonald's defense in a 33-19 Ravens win in which Purdy exited with the Ravens up 33-12.
With the Seahawks proving capable of limiting San Francisco's best offensive player on the ground and its top wide receiver through the air, the impact of injuries to other members of Purdy's supporting cast becomes magnified.
The 49ers will miss George Kittle, who averaged 5.7 receptions, 67.0 yards, and 0.71 touchdowns in seven Purdy starts prior to going down early last week. If No. 2 wide receiver Ricky Pearsall (knee;questionable) returns after a two-game absence, odds are he isn't going to be 100% after being limited in all three practices this week.
And we can't even be 100% confident that All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams is healthy despite being off the injury report. Williams was off the injury report last week, too, but gave up a sack and a season-high six pressures and later admitted he wasn't at full strength.
49ers vs Seahawks Predictions for Divisional Round
The Seahawks have held 10-of-17 opponents to 17 or fewer points this season, including five of the last six.
The 49ers have been held to 17 or fewer points only four times all season, but two of those four came against these very Seahawks, while a third came against the other top-two defense in DVOA they faced (Texans).
Pick: 49ers Team Total Under 18.5
Seahawks vs 49ers Betting Trends
- The 49ers are 2-4 straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS) against teams ranked top-six in defensive DVOA and 11-1 SU and 9-2-1 ATS versus everyone else.
