Clemson Tigers
Clemson entered last week as a true ACC title contender, and now most people think it was all a mirage. Clemson lost twice last week as road 'dogs against Miami and North Carolina.
I don't think the week could've went worse, since Clemson had defensive issues against Miami before being unable to make a shot against UNC. The Tigers went a staggering 1-of-17 from deep in the loss on Saturday.
Here's the silver lining: It felt like Clemson outplayed North Carolina for the majority of the game.
PJ Hall looks the part of an All-American in his senior season, averaging 19.5 points, 6.4 rebounds and two blocks per game. Plus, Hall is coming off a 10-point outing on 4-of-13 shooting against Bacot and UNC. Hall should come out ready to go against the Hokies.
I'm guessing Mike Young plays Lynn Kidd on Hall, which moves 6-foot-7 Mekhi Long on Ian Schieffelin. That creates a major mismatch for Clemson to destroy inside.
Size is a major area of advantage for Clemson. Hall, Schieffelin and Chauncey Wiggins all stand 6-foot-10 or larger, and Wiggins is an X-Factor to watch. He plays the three and boasts plus shooting and athleticism. He'll make a difference if Clemson's shooting turns around in this one.
Virginia Tech Hokies
Virginia Tech enters the game at 9-5, with losses against Wake Forest and Florida State in consecutive games. Wake hammered the Hokies by 23 points and Florida State won by three. The only difference in this one is Virginia Tech hosts Clemson.
The main culprit of Virginia Tech's regression is offensive issues. That seems strange considering Young's lineage of coaching elite offenses, but sometimes the roster just isn't good enough.
That's the case so far, as Kidd, Sean Pedulla and Hunter Cattoor account for about 75% of the Hokies' points.
If three players — none of which are star-studded dudes — account for that much scoring, it's a bad formula. Kidd has provided a huge jolt, with 15 points and seven rebounds per game (which both lead the team). He's developed into one of the ACC's best bigs.
The DNA of Young-coached teams will always come with perimeter jumpers. Virginia Tech attempts triples on 40% of field goals and connects on 34% of the shots. Cattoor is shooting 41% from deep, Pedulla is shooting 34% and Tyler Nickel is the only other player hitting on 30%+ from 3.
The team lacks shooters, which is strange for how the program is structured.
At least Virginia Tech's defense remains solid, as it ranks 60th in Defensive Efficiency.
