The game has never looked easier for Anthony Davis. He’s getting great looks at the rim on cuts and lobs due to JJ Redick’s desire for constant off-ball movement, extra passes, and screens.

Davis’ isolation frequency is up compared to his usual standards too, which has contributed to a monstrous amount of free throws.

Essentially, Redick has empowered Davis to be the top scorer by designing the offense to cater to his strengths. These are his stats across the Lakers’ first three games:

  • 36 points on 23 field goal attempts and 15 free throw attempts
  • 35 points on 18 field goal attempts and 17 free throw attempts
  • 31 points on 15 field goal attempts and 13 free throw attempts

That 35-point performance came against Phoenix, and Davis will get another chance to demolish them tonight.

Jusuf Nurkic is a physical center who can somewhat limit Davis’ post-ups, but the Suns’ center lacks the athleticism to stop AD on rolls and lobs. Nurkic also tends to foul a lot. Therefore, free throws and dunks should be huge sources of points for the MVP candidate in this rematch.

Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis are some of the best scorers in the game today, which means the under is never safe with them on the court. They are good enough to overpower poor matchups and score against anyone at any time. That X-Factor cannot be ignored.

Let’s talk about the matchup though. Phoenix has adjusted their its shot selection to be more 3-point heavy and less reliant on self-created midrange jumpers. They currently rank seventh in 3-point attempt rate, and they possess the shooters to knock them down at a highly efficient rate.

The Suns should consistently penetrate the paint because Los Angeles’ point-of-attack defense needs work. As a result, Phoenix will find success in a drive-and-kick style and rain down threes on the Lakers. The fact that they do not need to challenge Davis at the rim to score a ton of points is huge for their offensive outlook.

Meanwhile, the Suns’ perimeter defense is mediocre at best. They won’t be able to stop Los Angeles from attacking the basket, especially off of screens.

Finally, if Davis scores 30+ points, then the over is far more likely to hit. Correlated plays are wise.
