Matchup | Joe Musgrove vs. Jesus Luzardo |
First Pitch | 1:10 p.m. ET |
Today, we venture to LoanDepot Park to find value in a no runs first inning (NRFI) between the San Diego Padres and the Miami Marlins.
In the spotlight for the Marlins today, we have young southpaw Jesus Luzardo. His performance this season cements his status as one of the leading NRFI pitchers in baseball. Luzardo boasts an impressive 10-1 record and is an astounding 25-3 since 2022.
His strength seems to lie in his ability to challenge the hitters at their first encounter — he's allowed only 19 hits in 94 at-bats, yielding a .202 average. However, he truly shines against leadoff hitters, restricting them to a .194 average.
His track record against the Padres is also rather strong. Luzardo has successfully contained Jake Cronenworth (0-5), Nelson Cruz (0-3), Ha-Seong Kim (0-2) and Fernando Tatis (1-3). To make things more intriguing, the Padres have been struggling in the first inning over the past week. They've only managed two hits in the last 24 plate appearances.
On the other side of the NRFI is Padres ace Joe Musgrove. He boasts a solid 4-2 NRFI record this season and is a commendable 27-8 since 2022. Much like Luzardo, Musgrove has enjoyed considerable success against the Marlins in the past, effectively handling Jorge Soler (2-9), Jesus Sanchez (0-3), Bryan de la Cruz (1-5), Luis Arraez (0-4) and Garrett Cooper (0-1).
Equally important to note is the fact that the Marlins have been matching the Padres stride for stride in terms of their sluggish start in the first innings over the last week, registering a .143 average in the last 23 at-bats.
Factoring in the recent performances of both teams, FanDuel is currently offering this NRFI at an attractive price of -135.
As always, six outs to glory…
