As the month of October and playoff baseball approaches, the National League East remains up for grabs.
The New York Mets have a one-game lead over the Atlanta Braves with six games left in the season and three of those games will be against the Braves in Atlanta.
Both of these clubs are guaranteed at least a spot in the playoffs, but who will get the job done and earn a first-round bye by taking the division?
Fried a Steady Ace For Atlanta
Max Fried has a 2.50 ERA and 3.56 xFIP this year. His K% is 23% and his BB% is 4%. He limits hard contact and has a 51% ground ball percentage.
The Mets have three hitters with at least a .188 ISO against left-handed pitching this year in Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor and Eduardo Escobar.
Fried hasn't allowed a lot of power this year as he has a .105 ISO allowed to right-handed batters on the season. Fried has a 2.45 ERA at home.
The Mets are tied for third in the league averaging 4.99 runs per game on the road entering play Friday.
Mets expect Dominance From deGrom
The Braves are fifth in all of baseball averaging 4.88 runs per game at home, but they have the unenviable task of facing Jacob deGrom in this one. deGrom has a 2.93 ERA and 1.97 xFIP in 10 starts for the Mets this year.
He had an uncharacteristic hiccup his last time out as he allowed five earned runs in four innings against the Athletics in Oakland.
He only struck out five batters in that start and it was only the second time he failed to strike out at least eight batters in a start this year. deGrom has a 3.57 ERA on the road.
He also recorded double digit strikeouts in his last two starts before the game in Oakland.
All nine hitters in the Braves projected lineup have at least a 20% K% against right-handed pitching this season.
Mets-Braves Pick
deGrom was shaky in his last start, but I think he'll be too much for the Braves to handle here. This is a pretty important game for the Mets and deGrom is exactly who they want on the mound.
New York is 9-7 head-to-head against the Braves coming in. The Mets have also been a good road team this year as New York is 47-31 (.603 WP).
I took the Mets moneyline at -135 on DraftKings Sportsbook.
