Who Can Bet on Sports in Louisiana?
To participate in online sports betting, you'll have to meet the requirements below:
- Be at least 21 years old
- Use a legal sportsbook while being physically present in a parish that has legally approved sports betting
- Verify your account and comply with the sportsbook's terms and conditions
Who Regulates Louisiana Gambling?
The Louisiana Gaming Control Board (LGCB) regulates approved sportsbooks within the state.
Details of the LA Sports Betting Bill
The launch date comes after Louisiana’s sports betting regulation bill HB 697 was signed into law by Gov. John Bel Edwards in June 2021, allowing as many as 41 mobile operators to enter the state. Six sportsbooks were approved to go live on Day 1, and more sportsbooks are expected to follow in years to come.
- 15% online sports betting tax rate, 10% in-person tax rate
- Up to 41 online sportsbooks are permitted to operate
- Every online operator is required to partner with a pro sports team or sports venue
- Betting on all major sports markets is allowed except for high school and college prop betting
- Bettors must be 21+ to place wagers
Louisiana has laid the groundwork to be major, bettor-friendly sports betting state. Fortunately, wagering on college sports is allowed. There are still some "can do" and "can't do" betting actions, however.

Louisiana Sports Betting Background
Gov. John Bel Edwards signed Louisiana’s sports betting regulation bill in June 2021, allowing as many as 41 mobile operators to enter the state. The bill allows each of the state’s 20 combined casinos and pari-mutuel horse tracks to partner with two online operators apiece.
Full legalization came after Louisiana voters in 55 out of 64 parishes approved legal wagering in their respective jurisdictions. Eligible bettors age 21 and up physically within those 55 parishes can place a mobile bet with a licensed operator from their phone or mobile device without having to complete registration in person.
Louisiana is the first state to approve mobile sports betting on a county-by-county (or parish-by-parish) basis. Voters in every parish with a casino or horse track approved the 2020 referendum, allowing all these facilities to open retail sportsbooks on their properties. Bettors can wager from any approved parish, including those around Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Shreveport, and most other population centers.
The following nine parishes did NOT approve sports betting:
- Caldwell
- Catahoula
- Franklin
- Jackson
- LaSalle
- Sabine
- Union
- West Carroll
- Winn
Louisiana’s sports betting regulatory bill permits betting on college sports, including the LSU Tigers football team. Industry analysts estimate that college sports betting will make up 15% of total handle nationwide, a percentage that will likely be even higher in college football-crazy Louisiana.
It was quite a process getting sports betting to the goal line. Here are some of the important events along the way to legalization:

DFS Apps in Louisiana
Despite being available in most U.S. states, Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) has been illegal in Louisiana. DFS apps are now deemed legal in Louisiana — so residents can play permitted DFS apps only.
Major DFS forces like DraftKings or FanDuel, which also have sportsbooks, are only gaining access to the market now. Often, they hold an "early movers" advantage in markets as sports betting goes live because of their DFS foothold. The competition will escalate as the market is flooded with options at once. We expect this to translate to strong offers to the sports bettor's benefit.

Louisiana Sports Betting Revenue
As consumers, we don’t often think about the tax benefits of legal sports betting. However, the state of Louisiana will greatly benefit from the extra tax revenue that will be received once this rollout is complete.
House Bill 697 set the tax rates for both retail and mobile sports books. Mobile sportsbooks are taxed at 15%, while retail sports books are taxed on their profit at 10%. This is a fairly small rate compared to states like New York, which implements a tax rate of 51% on sports book operators. This tax revenue will benefit various state causes. Here is a breakdown of where the tax revenue goes:
-
- 60% to the general fund
- 25% to early education
- 12% to the parishes
- 2% to programs for gambling addiction
- 1% to a sports wagering purse fund for horse racing
