One team is playing out the string. The other is trying to get back on track with the playoffs approaching.

But the Red Wings and Hurricanes will have two things in common when they close out their season series at PNC Arena on Tuesday. Both will be playing the second part of a back-to-back set — with travel — and both are coming off disappointing losses.

On Monday night, the Red Wings dropped a 6-1 decision to the Stars on home ice at Little Caesars Arena. In Ottawa, the Hurricanes fell by a score of 3-2.

Here's how those results impact Tuesday's Red Wings vs. Hurricanes betting prospects, along with the latest on both teams and your best bet for the game.

Detroit Red Wings

Despite some big offseason signings and the emergence of 2022 Rookie of the Year Moritz Seider, the Red Wings will settle for being in the point-per-game range this season — in a league that hands out points for overtime losses. After Monday's defeat, Detroit has 80 points with two games left.

Lsat season, the Wings ended the season with 74 points and ranked 25th in scoring, 31st in defending and 26th in expected goals share at 5-on-5 at 46.22%.

Entering Tuesday's matchup, they're six points ahead of last year's pace, 22nd in scoring and 20th in goals against. Those are all solid incremental improvements, but they aren't on par with this year's meteoric risers (New Jersey and Seattle). Detroit's expected goals share has also remained virtually steady, still ranked 26th and now at 46.13%.

So the Wings are about to finish their seventh-straight season without a playoff berth. But they have often enjoyed playing spoiler over the last few weeks. Before Monday's blowout loss, Detroit was 4-1-2 in its previous seven games and was generating 4.14 goals per game — largely off a power play that was clicking at 41.2%. Leading the way: Dylan Larkin and David Perron, with 10 points each.

In net, Ville Husso has made all four starts since returning from a lower-body injury on April 2. On Monday, he got the hook after giving up three goals on five shots in just over 12 minutes of action. Magnus Hellberg took over for the final 47:50 of mop-up duty.

The Wings are carrying three goaltenders, so it's likely that Alex Nedeljkovic will get the nod on Tuesday. He has been the primary catalyst for the Wings' wins over the past couple of weeks. Since returning to action on March 23 (after a long stretch on the sidelines), he has gone 3-2-0 with a .925 save percentage and a 2.53 goals-against average.

Carolina Hurricanes

The season-ending knee injury for Andrei Svechnikov on March 15 was a real setback for the Hurricanes. But despite an uncharacteristic record of 6-7-1 since Svechnikov went down, Carolina is still holding on to the second-overall spot in the NHL standings, and the Devils are running out of time to catch them.

The Canes have been the league's best 5-on-5 puck possession team all season. They have maintained their usual standard of play in recent weeks, even though the results haven't always been there. But Carolina has struggled to score, managing an average of just 2.65 goals per game since the trade deadline.

Goaltending has still been solid, however, and the Canes are back to their top tandem of Freddie Andersen and Antti Raanta. Andersen got the start in Ottawa, so Raanta should get the nod against the Red Wings.

In three games since returning from a groin injury, Raanta has allowed a total of just six goals. He's sitting at a .909 save percentage and a 2.08 goals-against average for the season.

Red Wings vs. Hurricanes Pick

Tuesday's game is the third of the year between the Red Wings and Hurricanes, who have split the season series so far. On Dec. 13, Brady Skjei scored the only goal in a 1-0 shutout win for Carolina. On March 30, the Red Wings returned the favor with a 3-2 win.

Both games were close, and both were low scoring. But it was Pyotr Kochetkov who earned the shutout for Carolina in December, and he's now back in the AHL. Nedeljkovic picked up the win for the Wings two weeks ago, and he looks set to get another crack in Carolina.

There's some good value here on the Red Wings moneyline. Even Detroit +1.5 has a decent line at -118.

Even though the line for the over/under is set low at 5.5, both previous meetings went below that. Tuesday's game could well be the same, setting up our best bet at plus money.

Pick: Under 5.5 (+104 | Play to -110)
