For the first time in NHL history, all 32 teams will be on the ice on the same night, which has been dubbed Frozen Frenzy.
The action gets underway earlier than usual with the puck dropping on the Toronto Maple Leafs vs Washington Capitals at 6 p.m. ET, and the last starts at 11 p.m. ET.
Included in the Frozen Frenzy is an inter-conference battle between the Seattle Kraken and Detroit Red Wings at 8:15 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Seattle was expected to pick up where it left off after last season's playoff run; however, the early part of the campaign has not gone to plan.
Conversely, this was expected to be a development year for the Red Wings, but they are 5-1-0 to start the season.
The betting line hasn't adjusted far enough to reflect the discrepancy between these teams, leaving an edge in backing the home side.
The Kraken are drowning this year. Through the first six games of the season, Seattle has posted some of the worst metrics in the NHL.
Their ineffectiveness is best reflected in their 25th-ranked expected goals-for rating, but the issues are much more profound than that.
The Kraken are struggling to find the back of the net while also failing to create any meaningful chances. Those concerns are compounded by a daunting schedule, putting them at a significant disadvantage against the Red Wings.

Chances aren't coming naturally for the Kraken. The NHL's newest franchise is averaging a laughable 6.7 high-danger chances per game, failing to eclipse nine in all but one of their six outings.
Worse, the Kraken are getting out-chanced almost every time they step onto the ice. Seattle has attempted more quality opportunities than its opponents just once this season, posting the eighth-worst high-danger chance rating.
It's unlikely the Kraken buck that trend over their coming games. Seattle embarks on a four-game road trip, taking on some of the best teams in the Eastern Conference.
Moreover, this is an extension of an unfavorable stretch in which the Pacific Division contenders are playing seven of their first 10 games of the season on the road.
Evidently, it's going to take this team a little longer to find its sea legs.
The Red Wings have struck an unsustainable balance with their metrics this season, but as it stands, everything is going their way.
Detroit is going for its sixth win in seven games while out-pacing some of the best teams in the league. Although their run will inevitably come to an end, we're betting they milk out at least one more win against the Kraken.
Detroit's been one of the top-scoring teams in the NHL. The Red Wings have scored more goals at five-on-five than any other team, totaling 19 through their first six games of the year.
As expected, that number ratchets even higher across all strengths, with the Original Six franchise sniping a league-best 30 goals thanks to its impressive, albeit unsustainable, 16.0% shooting percentage.
The Red Wings' best efforts have come at Little Caesars Arena. There, they've out-scored their opponents by a cumulative 18-9 margin, recording six goals each time.
More impressively, 15 of those 18 tallies have come at five-on-five, leaving Seattle nowhere to hide as the Red Wings extract value from all four of their lines.
Kraken vs. Red Wings
Betting Pick & Prediction
For now, we're not betting against the hot-handed Red Wings. Eventually, the balance will start tilting away from Detroit, but they are firing on all cylinders early in the 2023-24 campaign.
Seattle is well-traveled, beginning on the East Coast, returning home for three games, and is now back in the Eastern time zone. Coupled with their uninspired play and unappealing moneyline price, now is not the time to bet on the Kraken.
This line has moved in favor of the home team, and rightfully so. We're still backing Detroit up to the -150 range, expecting them to dispatch the underperforming Kraken.
