Here's everything you need to know about Flyers vs. Islanders on Wednesday, Nov. 22 — our expert NHL preview, prediction and pick.
Looking to build off their five-game winning streak, the Philadelphia Flyers take on the New York Islanders. For a season that many had written off, the Flyers are playing some incredible hockey, ranking second in the Metropolitan Division.
The Islanders have finally hopped off the snide. After losing seven straight, they finally won against Calgary in a shootout.
It’ll be their first home game since Nov. 11, so I’m sure they’d love some home-cooking, even if their fans booed them off the ice the last time they were home.
Here’s a look at the odds, as well as my betting prediction between the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Islanders.
There’s been a resurgence on Broad Street, and everyone is chipping in.
Defenseman Travis Sanheim is an unusual suspect leading the team in scoring. Travis Konecny, on the other hand, leads the team in goals with 11.
Along with them, both Joel Farabee and Owen Tippett are massive contributors, with Tippett registering points in four out of his last five games.
Philly’s 5-on-5 play has been exceptional. The Flyers are seventh in Expected Goals with a solid 54.6 xGF%. Defensively, they’ve been even better, playing to a fifth-best 2.33 xGA/60.
While the Flyers’ even-strength play has been some of the best, the power play has been abysmal, scoring at just an 11.5% clip.
At least the penalty kill has succeeded 81.7% of the time, which is 13th in the league.
Carter Hart is playing some solid hockey this season, and he is a big reason for Philly’s success. After a couple of rough seasons, he’s bounced back to a .919 save percentage and a +0.6 Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx).

It’s hard to rag on the Islanders when they have key contributors playing at a high rate.
Noah Dobson and Mathew Barzal share the team lead in points, and Bo Horvat has registered seven points in his last seven games. Brock Nelson also remains on a bender as he leads the team with eight goals.
However, the Islanders have incredibly vanilla 5-on-5 play. They rank 17th with a 49.75 xGF% but have been getting destroyed on defense. Once a team known for its structure, the Islanders are now playing to a 2.97 xGA/60.
In shocking fashion, New York’s power play is actually pretty solid. It scores at around a 23% clip, which is higher than in past years. However, the penalty kill has been dreadful, succeeding only 69.5% of the time.
In truly unlikely fashion, Ilya Sorokin has not played his best hockey. The former Vezina nominee is playing to only a .906 save percentage and a -0.7 GSAx. Those aren't bad numbers for a regular netminder, but for Sorokin, it’s very underwhelming.
Flyers vs. Islanders
Betting Pick & Prediction
Even with the Flyers coming off a loss and the Isles coming off a win, I don’t have much faith in the Islanders. They’ve had a tendency of starting games strong and then faltering in the third period, where they either lose in regulation or in overtime.
The Flyers are incredibly well-rounded and have a legitimate defense.
FanDuel has the Islanders as the overwhelming favorite, and I couldn’t be more down on that. New York nearly blew a 3-1 lead against a struggling Calgary team, until it came back to win in a shootout.

I also wonder about coach Lane Lambert’s job security. These past two seasons, he’s dealt with a 10-game losing skid and now a seven-game skid.
In order to maximize my earnings, I have the Flyers coming out on top. Coach John Tortorella has done a wonderful job of getting the best out of his players, and I can see them bouncing back tonight.
