Germany faces Latvia to open Saturday’s men’s Olympic hockey action. The two teams faced very different tests in their opening games. Germany secured a 3-1 victory over Denmark, while Latvia was routed 5-1 by the United States.
This matchup suggests a more competitive game for Latvia, but it still faces a steep challenge against an improving German national team. Offensively, Germany is led by standout NHL forwards Leon Draisaitl and Tim Stutzle.
They combined for all three goals in Germany’s win over Denmark and are likely to spearhead the offense again.
Starting with Draisaitl, he is one of the best forwards in the world, regardless of nationality. He finished runner-up in last year’s Hart Trophy voting after a 52-goal season that led the league.
Draisaitl continues to produce, scoring 10 goals over his past 14 games, including Olympic play.

Latvian goaltender Arturs Silovs appeared in relief in that game, allowing one goal on six shots for a .833 save percentage. Latvia is likely to turn to him on Saturday.
