Virginia Cavaliers 2024 Season Preview
The Virginia Cavaliers' 2024 football season will likely come with its share of challenges and expectations. Under head coach Tony Elliott, the team is in the process of rebuilding and refurbishing the program. Elliott's Virginia tenure hasn't started well, as Virginia went 6-16 over the last two seasons. The expectations are low ahead of the 2024 season.
Virginia dealt with unsteady play at quarterback in 2023 with Troy Muskett and Anthony Colandrea. Muskett likely has the inside track to the starting job as a fifth-year senior. Colandrea is the QB of the future as he enters his sophomore season. The receiving core takes a big hit after WR Malik Washington left for the NFL Draft. Washington posted 1,426 yards and nine touchdowns last season.
Defense was a major issue for the Cavaliers last season. They were last in the ACC with 33.8 points allowed per game. The pass defense wasn't terrible, but they allowed nearly 200 yards on the ground per game. Defensive coordinator John Rudzinski has nowhere to go but up in his second season with Virginia.
The Cavaliers' out-of-conference schedule isn't too daunting, with Richmond, Wake Forest, Maryland, and Coastal Carolina. The ACC slate includes tough matchups against Louisville, Clemson, North Carolina, Notre Dame, and Virginia Tech.
While the Virginia Cavaliers may face some hurdles, the program has a history of turning things around under previous head coaches, including Bronco Mendenhall and Al Groh. The team will strive to improve their recent seasons and work towards contention in the ACC.
Virginia Cavaliers Point Spreads
Betting on the spread is a common way to bet on college football, and it involves betting against a sportsbook prediction of the margin of victory. It could look like this:
- Virginia +4.5 (-110)
- Boston College -4.5 (-110)
Virginia is an underdog here, denoted by the plus sign, while the Eagles are the favorites, shown by the minus sign. If the underdog loses by less than the spread (or wins outright), they “cover,” which means bets on them win. Boston College would have to win by more than the spread, in this case, five or more points, for bets to win.
Virginia Cavaliers Over/Unders
When you aren’t confident which team will win the game but expect a shootout, you could bet the over on an over/under bet.
Over/under, or totals, bets are wagers on the total scoring in a game. As an example of a game from the past, with a 55-point total in Virginia's game against Tennessee, the 49-13 final score means the over won. It didn't matter which team did the scoring, just that the sum of the points was over the total set by sportsbooks. In this case, had the scores added up to exactly 55, both over and under bettors would have been refunded their bets.
Virginia Cavaliers Moneylines
A simpler bet one can make on the Cavs is a moneyline bet. With a moneyline bet, the Cavs (or their opponent) win the bet if they win the game, whether it’s a blowout or a nail-biter.
The odds can get slightly confusing, but if you think in terms of a $100 bet they make more sense. If the Cavaliers are +250 underdogs, a $100 bet profits $250. If they are -250 favorites, a $250 bet yields $100 in profit. Like with spread bets, underdogs get a plus sign and favorites get a minus sign.
Virginia Cavaliers Props
Betting on player props is a great way to get some additional action on the Cavaliers. Player props are over/unders bets on the stats of a certain player.
Virginia Cavaliers Futures
Futures bets are bets on the outcome of the entire season. You can bet on the Cavaliers to win the ACC (+10000), the Virginia win total (O/U 4.5), or the Heisman Trophy winner.
