Northwestern Wildcats Football

The Northwestern Wildcats football team is heading into the 2023 season with pride on their mind. The Wildcats had an abysmal 1-11 record in 2022, struggling in every facet of the game. Coach Pat Fitzgerald and his staff will have a lot of work to do to right the ship again at Northwestern in 2023.

The Wildcats' offense has been a major area of concern, averaging just 12.8 points per game in the previous season (129th out of 131 in the nation). Coordinator Mike Bajakian returns despite the struggles, and the team will look to Cincinnati QB transfer Ben Bryant to provide a boost. Bryant brings experience and a proven track record from his time at Cincinnati, making him a crucial addition to the offense. The receiving corps has also been reinforced with the addition of transfer Cam Johnson, who brings a wealth of experience from his time at Vanderbilt and Arizona State. Running back Cam Porter, who is returning from an ACL tear suffered in 2021, is expected to be a strength for the team, along with sophomore Anthony Tyus III and freshman Joseph Himon II. The offensive line, led by tackle Caleb Tiernan, will need to step up to replace the production of departed players, including first-round NFL Draft pick Peter Skoronski.

The defense is undergoing changes with the arrival of new defensive coordinator David Braun from North Dakota State. Braun aims to simplify the defensive scheme and maximize the talent of the players. The secondary is projected to be a strength of the unit, with experienced players like senior safety Rod Heard II and cornerback Garnett Hollis Jr. leading the way. The defensive line, under the guidance of new coach Christian Smith, will rely on players like Sean McLaughlin, Aidan Hubbard, and Najee Story to step up at the front. Northwestern is likely going to lean on this defensive unit, which ranked 68th in 2022, allowing 28.1 points per game to opposing teams.

The Wildcats are not seen as legitimate contenders for the Big Ten this year at consensus +25000 odds. They are ranked 12th out of 14 in the preseason.

Northwestern Wildcats Point Spreads

Point spread betting is the most popular way to bet on college football in the U.S., and it's based on the amount a team wins or loses by. Northwestern faired poorly in the spread, but not as bad as their overall record, at 5-7 in 2022. Here’s an example from last season:

  • Northwestern -1 (-110)
  • Iowa +1 (-110)

The favored Wildcats won the game, 21-20, matching the one point that the spread was set at. This means bettors on either side, Northwestern or Iowa, had their bet returned. For Northwestern bets to have paid off, they would’ve had to win by two or more, while Iowa would have needed to win the game outright (since there are no ties in college football) to cover the spread here.

Northwestern Wildcats Over/Unders

Northwestern was also only 5-7 on hitting the over in 2022. While still better than their overall record, still not favorable for bettors. For over/unders (sometimes called totals) bets: It’s about the total points scored between both teams.

Sportsbooks set the total for the Wildcats game against Iowa at 43 last season, meaning the 21-20 final was a win for unders. Over bettors needed at least 44 points, while 43 points on the nose would have been a tie.

Northwestern Wildcats Moneylines

Moneylines are just bets on the winner of the game. Moneylines bets pay out less to the favorite (minus odds) and more to the underdog (plus odds).

As -112 favorites against Iowa, for example, a bettor would need to stake $112 in order to potentially win $100. However, as +245 underdogs to Wisconsin, a $100 bet paid $245 when Northwestern pulled off the upset.

Northwestern Wildcats Props

Player props are bets on the stat lines for individual (usually skill position) players, and you can take over or under a specific stat. Some Wildcats props you could bet on include QB passing yards, WR receptions, or RB touchdowns.

Northwestern Wildcats Futures

Sportsbooks are expecting minimal growth from the Wildcats this season, giving the team the 12th-best odds to win the Big 10. This is an example of a futures bet, which is a wager that is decided by the entire season. Other futures bets you could place on the Wildcats in 2023 include over/under on season wins and odds for players to win various awards.
