The Tampa Bay Rays host the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday afternoon. Tyler Wells will take the mound for Baltimore, opposed by young Tampa Bay hurler Taj Bradley.
Sean Koerner, Action Network's director of analytics, breaks down his favorite prop from the slate below. Be sure to check out our MLB props page for full projections for a variety of player props across the board.
Tyler Wells Under 5.5 Strikeouts (-130, BetMGM)
The Tampa Bay Rays' starting lineup has seven right-handed batters, but Wells has a lower K rate against righties (20.5%) compared to lefties (26.9%) in his career. So the right-handed-heavy lineup won't help him as much as one might think.
This is likely due to the fact that Wells uses his changeup more against lefties (34% whiff rate) compared to a mix of cutter (20% whiff rate) and slider (28% whiff rate) against righties.
The 7-through-9 hitters will be the best chance for Wells to rack up Ks, but I have him getting pulled right around the No. 6 hitter the third time through the order on average.
That means that it's less likely he will face the bottom-third of the order for a third time, which is a key to this prop.
I'm projecting this line closer to -190.
