Rangers vs Yankees Preview
Nathan Eovaldi will face the difficult task of shutting down the Yankees' high-powered lineup for a second consecutive start on Wednesday.
Eovaldi threw seven scoreless innings versus New York in his previous outing, allowing only four hits and registering seven Ks.
Eovaldi's previous start versus New York took place at pitcher-friendly Globe Life Field, and the challenge will be greater Wednesday with the Yankees having just seen him and in a much more batter-friendly environment.
Eovaldi's stuff has not been quite as lively this season, and he has allowed hard contact far more consistently (47.5% hard-hit rate).
His strikeout-minus-walk rate has also dipped to 16.8%. To this point, he has not found success away from his pitcher-friendly home venue, as he holds an ERA of 5.66 and WHIP of 1.60 on the road.
The Rangers bullpen holds a league-leading 2.78 ERA, but as a whole has seemingly been quite fortunate. Rangers relievers rank 21st in xFIP and hold a strikeout-minus-walk rate of 11.0%.
The Rangers offense ranks 24th with a wRC+ of 94, which is a testament to how competitive the league has been thus far, with only a few offenses offering notably worse results than the majority of the pack. They rank 22nd in expected weighted on-base average and have struck out 23.9% of the time.
The Yankees' rotation has had a spectacular start to the season, and Will Warren has been a big reason for their dominance thus far.
Warren currently holds the fifth-best ERA in the AL and ranks seventh in total strikeouts, but both of those marks still sit behind teammate Cam Schlittler.
Warren currently holds a Pitching+ rating of 123 and a strikeout-minus-walk rate of 25.0%. Even as he's suffered from a higher-than-average BABIP of .301, opponents have still hit just .224 with a .336 slugging rate against him.
The Yankees offense ranks third in MLB with a wRC+ of 121 and has offered greater plate discipline and superior depth than in years past. They hold a wRC+ of 124 versus right-handed pitching and have loved slugging at home, where they hold an absurd .506 slugging rate.
Ben Rice is currently listed as day-to-day with a hand contusion and would be a significant absence given his team-leading slugging rate of .759.
New York's bullpen has also been a strength thus far, as it has pitched to an ERA of 2.98 and an xFIP of 3.66. It also holds the fifth-highest strikeout-minus-walk rate in baseball.

Rangers vs Yankees MLB Pick to Bet
While Eovaldi was dominant versus the Yankees in his previous start, replicating that success Wednesday at Yankee Stadium could prove to be quite difficult.
On paper, New York's lineup matches up quite well versus a righty that relies heavily on low-velocity fastballs, and I'm not expecting Eovaldi to manage a similar level of success.
Warren, meanwhile, holds some of the most impressive underlying metrics in baseball thus far and has been every bit as dominant as his 2.39 ERA suggests.
At -125, I see value in backing the Yankees to win the first five innings (three-way line).
Pick: Yankees F5 -0.5
