Tanner Houck (BOS) Under 5.5 Hits Allowed (-120)
Red Sox vs. White Sox | 8:10 p.m. ET
In his second full season as a member of their starting rotation, Tanner Houck has emerged as an ace for the Red Sox. In his first 12 starts, Houck is pitching to a 1.85 ERA, and only allowed 60 hits across 78 innings.
Houck has stayed under this line in eight of his 12 starts. His pitch mix primarily consists of a slider, sinker and split-fingered fastball; all three rating above average in terms of Stuff+ (per FanGraphs).
What’s kept Houck particularly effective this season is his elite groundball rate. At 54.2%, he ranks in the 90th percentile of pitchers, with a 5.1% launch angle, well below the major league average of 12.2% (per Baseball Savant).
That should come in particularly handy today against the White Sox. The south-siders as a team are hitting an awful .176 against ground-ball pitchers (per Baseball Reference).
With the White Sox embroiled in a 13-game losing streak, it should come as no surprise that their offense has been anemic of late.
Against right-handed pitching over the last two weeks, Chicago is hitting .201. Thirteen of the last 20 right-handed starters have stayed under this line against the White Sox (injuries excluded).
I have Houck projected to only surrender five hits tonight, making this one of my favorite looks on today’s slate.
Pick: Tanner Houck (BOS) Under 5.5 Hits Allowed (-120)
