AL Online Sportsbook Updates 2024

Alabama

Alabama sports betting is not yet legal.

Lawmakers tried to legalize sports betting two years ago, but were unable to pass either of two Senate bills before adjourning for the year. However, the recent approvals of HB 151 and HB 152 could set the Yellowhammer State on pace to legalize sports betting in 2025, after the Senate Tourism Committee decided to replace sports betting and casinos with a legalized lottery in Alabama.

Alabama is one of the only states without a lottery and historically its lawmakers have been resistant to gaming expansion. Two of Alabama's neighbors, Tennessee and Mississippi allow sports betting, though Mississippi restricts it to casinos. If and when Alabama legalizes it's reasonable to expect a model similar to Tennessee's, where only online betting is legal.

Alabama Sports Betting Updates:

  • March 6, 2024: The Senate Tourism Committee of Alabama removed legalized sports betting and casino gaming and replaced it with lottery only on the current gambling bill. If legalized, the lottery would include gambling in bingo halls and racetracks.
  • February 15, 2024: The House approves of the new online gambling package one day after the state's House Economic Development and Tourism Committee approval. The Senate is the next in line to approve this online and in-person gambling package.
  • February 14, 2024: Alabama’s House Economic Development and Tourism Committee advanced an amended version of HB 151 and HB 152 to the House for further approval. This amended version grants the Poarch Band of Creek Indians to open and operate their casinos away from tribal lands, which is unprecedented in the casino and sports betting industries.
  • February 8, 2024: State Reps Chris Blackshear and Andy Whitt introduce House Bill 152, which includes legalized sports betting, lottery, and casino gaming at state casinos. Gov. Kay Ivey has voiced her support for legalizing a lottery and online casino gaming. The proposed tax rate was set at 24% in the bill.

While there is no legalized sports betting in Alabama at this time, there is another alternative available to residents of the Yellowhammer State. PrizePicks, a Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) provider, offers users an opportunity to bet on player props across a variety of sports leagues. In comparison to other DFS sites, though, users are not competing against one another, but instead, have to choose over/under totals on player stat lines for a given contest.

Recently, the leading DFS provider released their very own peer-to-peer fantasy game in late January 2024 called PrizePicks Pick 'Em Arena, where players can challenge one another. It's similar to PrizePicks, but this time your picks are grouped against players who have a similar skill level and whoever earns the most points (determined by your correct picks) wins!

While we await any news on the legalization status of sports betting in Alabama, here's the state's gambling background and tips you should know to be prepared when the day comes.

Alabama Sports Betting Background

Lawmakers have tried for years to legalize sports betting, but a myriad of obstacles, including the lack of a state lottery and religious opposition to gaming, have made it a difficult task. The recent introduction of HB 151 could set Alabama on pace to legalize sports betting in 2024 or 2025.

They got close this past year after the Senate Tourism committee advanced two separate sports betting proposals, one that would have brought the question of legalization before voters on the November ballot. But ultimately it failed to get enough support for a floor vote. Lawmakers hopeful for gaming will likely try a similar approach next year.

Whenever Alabama legalizes sports betting it will likely be regulated by the Alabama Education Lottery and Gambling Commission.

There is speculation that future legislation is more likely to be successful than past attempts as several of the states bordering AL have already begun passing sports betting bills. In addition, studies have recently been commissioned by the state to estimate the approximate revenue to be made through legalized sports betting.

Alabama Legalization Timeline

  • March 6, 2024: The Senate and Tourism Committee have amended the gambling bills to include a legalized lottery only instead of sports betting and casinos. The House is next to approve or deny these gaming bills.
  • February 15, 2024: The House approves of the new online gambling package that was introduced in early February 2024. HB 151 was approved 70-32 and HB 152 was approved 67-31, which shows that the House is heavily in favor of passing these bills. The Senate is the next in line to approve this online and in-person gambling package.
  • February 14, 2024: The House Economic Development and Tourism Committee approved of the amended version of the legal gambling bills (HB 151 and HB 152) that were introduced in early February. Notably, the amended version included the Poarch Band of Creek Indians to operate gambling away from tribal lands, which has never been done before. The House is the next in line to approve this package that includes a lottery, in-person and online sports betting, and up to 10 brick-and-mortar casino licenses.
  • February 8, 2024: State Representatives Chris Blackshear and Andy Whitt introduce House Bill 152, which includes legalized sports betting, lottery, and casino gaming at in-person casinos.
  • April 7, 2022: The Alabama legislature adjourns for 2022 without voting on a sports betting bill.
  • March 10, 2022: The Senate Tourism Committee approves two bills to bring the question of legal sports betting to the November ballot.
  • March 3, 2022: Sen. Greg Albritton introduces two bills that would put legal sports betting to a ballot vote.
