Virginia Tech Hokies 2024 Season Preview

Virginia Tech took a major leap back to respectability last season after going 3-8 in 2022.

The Hokies increased their win total to seven games in their second season under Brent Pry, and defeated Tulane in the Military Bowl.

Yet, Virginia Tech still has to narrow the gap between itself and the upper echelon programs in the ACC.

Quarterback Kyron Drones will be vital to that mission. The former Baylor signal caller amassed 22 touchdowns last season through his dual-threat exploits.

Running back Bhayshul Tuten, who tallied 863 yards and 10 touchdowns, also adds explosiveness to the ground game.

Receivers Jaylin Lane, Stephen Gosnell, and Da’Quan Felton will be the primary targets for Drones. Ali Jennings is also back to full health after a knee injury.

Virginia Tech’s defense was a top-20 unit nationally last season.

The pass coverage is the strength of the Hokies’ defense. Cornerbacks Mansoor Delane and Dorian Strong comprise one of the best tandems in the country.

The Hokies’ pass rush figures to be potent once again with edge rusher Antwaun Powell-Ryland in the fold once again. Powell-Ryland tallied 9.5 of Virginia Tech’s 39 sacks last season.

Virginia Tech picked up defensive tackles Kemari Copeland, Kelvin Gilliam Jr. and Aeneas Peebles and linebacker Sam Brumfield in the transfer portal.

Dating back to the glory days under the legendary Frank Beamer, special teams has been a priority for the Hokies.

However, last season was the first occurrence in two decades that Virginia Tech had a pair of top-10 kick and punt returners.Tuten and Tucker Holloway are back in those respective roles. Highly efficient kicker John Love is another special teams weapon.

Figure on the Hokies to put together another solid season as Pry continues to rebuild the program.

Virginia Tech Hokies Point Spreads

The most common type of bet in the U.S., spread bets are wagers on the winning margin of a football game. Here’s how that may look:

  • Virginia Tech -3 (-110)
  • Virginia +3 (-110)

The favored team, the one with the minus sign, has to win by more than the spread to cover, while the underdog team (plus sign) covers by winning the game or losing by less than the spread. With whole number spreads like the example above (they frequently are listed in half-point denominations), bets on both sides could also tie — if Virginia Tech won by exactly a field goal.

Virginia Tech Hokies Over/Unders

Totals, or over/unders, are bets on how many points will be scored between both teams in a game. Winners and losers don’t matter here, just points!

For example, books set a very high 69-point total for a past Hokies' game against Wake Forest. With an uncharacteristically low-scoring 16-23 loss, under bettors won by a mile. For over bettors to have won, the teams would have had to combine for at least 70 points, while a total of 69 would have been a tie, returning bettors on both sides their stake.

Virginia Tech Moneylines

Moneylines are a way to bet just on which team will win the game, regardless of margin. Just like with spread bets, teams expected to lose have a plus sign by their moneyline odds, and teams expected to win have a minus sign. Unlike spread bets, the number after the sign represents the payouts of the bet, not the number of points.

Let's look at an example again:

  • Virginia Tech -149
  • Virginia +129

In this case, $149 wagers on the favorites profit $100, while $100 wagers on the underdog profit $129.

Virginia Tech Props

For the fantasy football fan, proposition (or prop) bets are a fun way to get involved in betting on the Hokies. Player props are over/under bets on individual players.

Virginia Tech Futures

Expecting the Hokies to have a good season but don’t want to bet on individual games? You could bet over on their season win total, which is a futures bet. Futures are wagers on the whole season, and they pay out when the results become clear.

Other Hokies futures include their odds to win the ACC, their national title chances, and awards markets for certain players such as the Heisman Trophy

How to Bet on the Virginia Tech Hokies
