Maryland Terrapins 2024 Season Preview

The Maryland Terrapins enter the 2024 football season with a sense of optimism after a second consecutive 8-5 campaign.

Led by head coach Mike Locksley, the Terrapins are looking to close the gap between perennial Big Ten contenders Michigan, Penn State, and Ohio State. This is in addition to new conference additions USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington.

One of the key factors for Maryland’s prospects in the upcoming season will be having to replace standout quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, who’s now in the CFL. Tagovailoa was regarded as one of the top signal-callers in the Big Ten, and his presence on the field added a strong offensive dimension to the team.

Now it’s an open competition for Tagovailoa’s replacement. The competitors include Billy Edwards Jr., NC State transfer MJ Morris, Cameron Edge, and Champ Long.

Whoever gets the nod will be gifted with a stacked group of wide receivers. Octavian Smith Jr., Kaden Prather, Taj Felton, and Shaleak Knotts are talented targets.

Maryland bolstered its offensive line through the portal with pickups such as tackle Alan Herron (D-II Shorter), guard Aliou Bah (Georgia), and center Josh Kaltenberger (Purdue).

Running back Roman Hemby will get more touches now that the dual-threat Tagovailoa is gone. Colby McDonald will be relied upon in short yardage situations as well.

The best aspect of Maryland’s defense figures to be along the front seven which has five returning starters and six seniors. Linebacker Ruben Hyppolite II, defensive end Quashon Fuller, and linebacker Kellan Wyatt will be vital contributors.

Maryland will once again be an underdog to win the Big Ten as oddsmakers have the Terps at 10th in the conference to take the crown. However, Maryland should continue its steady progress under Locksley.

Maryland Terrapins Point Spreads

The Big Ten is even more competitive now that the conference has expanded. If you think the Terrapins are going to perform well but winning the game outright is a bridge too far, consider betting on their point spreads.

Point spreads are a type of wager in which the underdog (plus odds) only has to keep the score within a certain margin to win the bet. For example:

  • Maryland +27.5 (-110)
  • Penn State -27.5 (-110)

If Maryland loses 35-10, it still wins against the spread (ATS) because it lost by fewer than 27.5 points. Penn State needs to win by 28 or more to “cover” its side of the spread.

Maryland Terrapins Over/Unders

Another common bet is an over/under, or total, bet. With this type of bet, you’re wagering not on how well the Terrapins do against their opponent, but on the total number of points scored in the contest.

For example, if books set the total for the game against Penn State at 53, and the final score is 35-19, over bettors win since the combined score (54) is over the total. For the under to win, 52 or fewer combined points would be needed. Notice I didn’t say which team had 35 and which had 19 — with totals bets, it doesn’t matter.

Maryland Terrapins Moneylines

Moneylines are bets one can make on which team will win the game outright. Why would somebody bet on the Terrapins moneyline against, say, Ohio State? Well, to account for the relative likelihood of either team to win the game, oddsmakers adjust the payouts to be more for the underdog (plus odds) and less for the favored (minus odds) teams.

The Terrapins might be +950 underdogs against OSU, meaning a $100 bet would pay a $950 profit if Maryland won. Betting on a -950 favorite against Maryland means you’d need to put $950 on the line to get a $100 profit in return.

Maryland Terrapins Props

Proposition, or prop, bets are wagers on how one player will do in a game. For example, you could bet over or under on the passing yards, rushing yards, completions and much more for whoever wins Maryland's quarterback battle. You can bet on most skill position players depending on the sportsbook.

Maryland Terrapins Futures

Sportsbooks have set Maryland's win total future at 6.5 for the coming 2024 season. Futures are bets on the entire season for a team or player. You can bet over/under on team wins, player statistics for the whole season, as well as get odds on Maryland to win the Big Ten or players to win certain awards like the Heisman Trophy
