Miami (OH) RedHawks Betting Preview: Offense a Total No-Show
It was certainly not the effort head coach Chuck Martin wanted to see from his football team last Thursday against Wisconsin. Despite a few questionable non-penalty calls against them, their defense performed well.
They draw a decent matchup against Rutgers, but this should be another talent mismatch. They should be able to hold their own, but that may not be enough to cover the number.
Meanwhile, their offense was a complete disaster. Quarterback Dequan Finn finished the game 9-18 with 60 yards and two interceptions.
They had zero explosive plays and didn't convert a third — or fourth-down — conversion. It was as ugly as the box score suggests, so it could be a long year for the RedHawks' offense.
Ohio quarterback Parker Navarro shredded the Rutgers defensive unit last week, but that could be because of his elite talent.
Based on what I saw last week, I have zero faith that the offense could figure things out in a week, especially when there was nothing positive they could've pulled from the tape.
Rutgers Scarlet Knights Betting Preview: Can the Defense Hold Tight?
I'm concerned about Rutgers this week, but more so on the defensive side of the ball. Quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis, aka the Greek Rifle, performed strongly against the Bobcats.
He finished 24-34 with 321 yards and 2 touchdowns. They had eight explosive plays on offense and did enough at the end of the game to come away victorious.
They may struggle a bit more to score points against the RedHawks, but their talent advantages should propel them to another comfortable victory.
Their defense remains a significant question mark, though, especially after last week.
First and foremost, the Knights allowed eight explosive plays to the Bobcats and 81 plays from scrimmage. They were carved up all night by Navarro, which makes me wonder if it was because of Navarro's talent rather than the makeup of their defense.
I won't overreact to one week; this is an excellent opportunity for the Knights to clean things up on the defensive side of the ball. It's a terrific matchup against a horrendous RedHawks offense, which should continue to struggle.
There's not much value on the spread, but there's an angle that I'll be looking to attack, thanks to the great matchup on the defensive side of the ball.
Miami (OH) vs Rutgers Pick, Betting Analysis
I'm fading Miami (OH)'s offense here. It might be foolish to overreact to one week, but it looked dreadful last week.
The numbers also speak for themselves, as the RedHawks generated zero explosive plays and rank near the bottom of the country in EPA/play.
What was also astounding about their offensive performance last week is that the RedHawks finished No. 1 in the country in starting field position, which tarnishes their dreadful performance even further.
I don't particularly love Rutgers' defense, but this is a huge fade of Miami (OH)'s offense more than anything.
It should be another lousy effort from Martin's squad.
