Oregon State vs Oregon College Basketball Betting Preview

Oregon State Basketball

The luckiest team in college hoops might be Oregon State. The Beavers are 3-0, but each of their wins came by three or fewer points.

Also, Oregon State battled back from trailing with less than 10 minutes to go in all three games.

So, why is Oregon State addicted to close games? It plays at one of the slowest tempos in America, ranking 344th in adjusted tempo.

The Beavers also shoot a bunch of 3s, with over half their attempts coming from deep. However, guard Dez White and forward Isaiah Sy are the only two players shooting above 33% from deep.

Guard Josiah Lake II is definitely Oregon State's best player. He's the lone double-digit scorer on the Beavers roster at 14.3 points per game. However, Lake is shooting a woeful 25% from deep, so he'll need to improve in that area if Oregon State wants a chance to beat its rivals.

Oregon State also has the size to battle Oregon's size. The Beavers start a pair of 6-foot-11 bigs in Johan Munch and Yaak Yaak. They also have former Pitt center Jorge Diaz Graham and 7-foot-2 Noah Amenhauser if the starters get in foul trouble.

That depth could prove to be valuable in this matchup.

Oregon Basketball

Another year, another unimpressive start for Oregon. The Ducks tend to play down to inferior foes during the non-conference. So far, Oregon has snuck past Hawaii by one, Rice by four and had a late surge versus South Dakota State to secure a 14-point win.

The Ducks' defense has been their saving grace, as they rank 21st in defensive efficiency. Scoring against the Ducks' massive frontline has been a struggle, with opponents shooting just 42.1% from inside the arc.

It begins with linchpin Nate Bittle, who blocked two-plus shots in all three games and had six against Rice. Pair the shot-blocking prowess of Bittle with the length and quickness of Kwame Evans Jr., and that's a fearsome duo.

For as good as Oregon looks defensively, it's been totally dreadful offensively. The Ducks have shot it very inefficiently, hitting just 28.6% from downtown and 47.7% from inside the arc.

They only have three real scoring options. Bittle is the team's leading scorer at 17 points per game, and he's also shooting just 27% from deep.

In the backcourt, Jackson Shelstad and Takai Simpkins each average 14+ points a night, but both are shooting it poorly from deep.

That's quite a worrisome trend for the Ducks that all three of their best players are shooting 30% or worse from deep.

The Ducks appeared to be a wing short roster-wise, and it's a bigger issue than I imagined. I was hoping former CBA pro Wei Lin could be an option, but he's been awful, shooting 1-for-17 from the field.

In order for Oregon to be successful, it needs to be a defense-led squad. Shelstad will eventually get rolling, but the offense will mainly be him, Bittle and Simpkins.

That will greatly limit the Ducks' offensive upside.

Oregon State vs. Oregon Betting Analysis

Neither team has blown me away thus far.

To that point, I expect another pretty ugly, lower-scoring game.

With the total sitting at 143.5, the under stands out to me. I can't see both teams reaching the 70-point marker needed to hit the over.

Oregon State and Oregon both lack the firepower to put up massive scoring nights.

The Beavers will slow things down enough, and the Ducks' defense will play a key role.

My Pick: Under 143.5 (Play to 141)
