Detroit Preview

Detroit has posted its first winning season since 2016 and is playing for a chance to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012.

Second-year head coach Mark Montgomery has gotten the Titans to play their best ball late in the season. The Titans are 17-14 on the season but 9-2 since the end of February.

Detroit ranks fifth in the Horizon in both offensive and defensive efficiency.

In conference play, the Titans are shooting a ridiculous 39.9% from deep, yet they only attempt 3s on 29% of their possessions. They were also the least efficient two-point conference in the Horizon — they end up taking a ton of tough twos.

Defensively, they lead the league in effective field goal percentage allowed but rank second-worst in forcing turnovers.

The Titans are led by senior guard Orlando Lovejoy, who has been playing some fantastic basketball to close the season. Over Detroit’s last 11 games, Lovejoy is averaging 20.2 points per game.

Wright State Preview

Wright State beat Northern Kentucky for the third time this season last night in the Horizon Semifinals to advance to the championship game.

The Raiders won the league by two games in the regular season with a 15-5 record.

Under second-year head coach Clint Sargent, the Raiders boast the most efficient offense in the Horizon, alongside the fourth-best defense.

But this Wright State offense has hit another level lately. The Raiders have scored 90 or more in three straight games, posting 1.3 points per possession in each.

TJ Burch leads the way for this group — the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Burch leads the nation in steal rate and provides 11.8 points and 3.5 assists a game.

Wright State also had the Freshman of the Year in the league in big man Kellen Pickett, the league’s second-best shot blocker and number-one defensive rebounder per KenPom.

Sargent hit on another freshman in this class, Michael Cooper, who has been electric off the bench. He’s averaging 19 points per game over these last three. He’s the team’s leading scorer this season.

How To Make Detroit vs. Wright State NCAAB Picks

These teams split the regular-season series, with both matchups decided by one possession. Wright State won 84-82 on January 9th, with Detroit Mercy winning 77-74 on February 12th. The road team won both matchups.

Wright State has graded out as a much better team all season long, 80 spots ahead in KenPom.

But there’s just something about Detroit.

The Titans have overcome some adversity this year, losing some players to injury. Guys who weren’t big factors early on have really stepped up, like big man Ryan Kalambay.

They play with a ton of physicality and competitiveness, and I’ve really liked how they’ve played in this tournament.

I’ll take the points with the underdog.

My Pick: Detroit +4 or Better
