Clemson vs SMU College Basketball Betting Preview
Editor's Note: Boopie Miller is out against Clemson.
We'll see how healthy SMU is, but I like the Mustangs in this spot, as this is essentially an NCAA Tournament game for them.
If the Mustangs lose to the Tigers, it's unlikely they reach the Big Dance. And if they win, they just have to avoid a bad loss down the stretch.
Andy Enfield's squad is 5-2 in Quad 2 games, but it has yet to win a Quad 1 game this season (0-4), losing to Mississippi State, Duke, North Carolina and Louisville.
If you look at SMU from a pure metrics perspective, it should already be in the Big Dance. But that Quad 4 record — and the fact that they have zero wins versus the likely at-large field — is holding it back at this moment.
I don't know if Boopie Miller, who missed SMU's game earlier this week against Notre Dame with a foot injury, is going to play. He was a gametime decision for that outing, so I expect him to suit up.
SMU wants to live on the offensive glass (39th nationally in offensive boards per game), and that's exactly what you can do against Clemson (223rd nationally in offensive boards allowed per game).
Also, the Mustangs are solid in the mid-range, which is another area you need to capitalize against the Tigers.
With its very compact defense, Enfield's unit isn't going to allow the Tigers to operate in the post with Ian Schieffelin or Viktor Lakhin.
My one concern is that the Mustangs have been getting lucky defensively when it comes to the 3-ball and Clemson can shoot.
However, Clemson may be fat and happy here. The Tigers have an easy schedule remaining, they've already beaten Duke and they're already in the NCAA Tournament.
This is a good spot for SMU, depending on Miller's health.
