On Polymarket's "NBA: LeBron James Next Team" market, the Miami Heat have pulled ahead of the Cleveland Cavaliers for the first time all summer, and the gap between them isn't small.

The timing tracks with pressure from the league office.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver has said he can't lock in the 2026-27 schedule until James picks a team, and ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported that James won't be rushed by the league's timeline: "LeBron does not care about holding the league up with his schedule," Windhorst said on NBA Today. "He will make them wait," he added, "until he is good and ready to make a decision."
Why Miami Suddenly Looks Like the Frontrunner
Heat president Pat Riley has made his intentions plain. During Giannis Antetokounmpo's introductory press conference last week, Riley confirmed the franchise is actively pursuing James, even while insisting he doesn't know which way James is leaning.
Antetokounmpo sounded thrilled at the idea of sharing a locker room with him. "If there was a scenario for that to happen, I'd be very, very excited," he said. "He's one of the best players to ever play this game, if not the best." A second act in Miami would also close a loop that opened in 2014, when James left South Beach for Cleveland.
Cleveland's Case Hasn't Gone Away
Not everyone is sold on the Heat surge.
Podcaster Bill Simmons has stuck with Cleveland through every swing in the market this month, stating on his show that he still envisions a second reunion happening and that the holdup is likely just about contract structure rather than King James' actual preference.
On paper, the fit still works: a lineup with Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen hands James a finished roster and a storyline that writes itself for what could be his final season or two.
The Cleveland finale narrative isn't hard to see coming. Yahoo Sports' Kevin O'Connor reported that James may be filming a documentary throughout his 2026-27 season, pointing toward it being his final season in the NBA. Going back to Cleveland would be fitting for all of the off-court reasons you can easily imagine. A third stint in Cleveland is poetic.
Golden State Cools, Philadelphia Lingers
The Warriors numbers on Polymarket spiked after a video showed coach Steve Kerr, stuck in traffic, telling a fan "we got him" when asked about James. That momentum has since cooled, but the Curry connection keeps them in the conversation.
Philadelphia remains the longest shot of the four; Jaylen Brown's arrival gives James interesting teammates, but nobody's fully sold on how it fits alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
For now, the board keeps moving and James keeps quiet. If Beverley's tip turns out right, this update might not last too long.
