We have the first installment of this three-game interleague series on Monday night with the NL East's Philadelphia Phillies hosting the AL Central's Detroit Tigers.
These teams enter this matchup in opposite form with Detroit losing its past three games and Philadelphia riding a two-game win streak. Will the Phillies defend their home diamond, or can the Tigers pull off the road upset?
Here's a look at the odds, as well as my Tigers vs. Phillies betting pick.
It has been an underwhelming start to the campaign for the Detroit Tigers, who enter this contest with a 26-31 record. However, since they play in the weak AL Central, they still sit in third place, so the season is very much alive.
However, with this team's current lineup, I would not be too optimistic. This season, Detroit ranks in the bottom five of the league in runs scored per game, hits per game, BA, SLG, OPS and home runs.
Additionally, this team struggles with the punch-out, ranking 20th in the league in K%. Looking at Monday's projected starting lineup, six of the nine hitters possess a K% north of 21% this year.
Right-hander Aaron Nola takes the mound for the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday evening and should be a good candidate to back in this contest. Through 12 starts this season, Nola is 4-4 with a 4.70 ERA and 1.13 WHIP.
Those are certainly not the strongest surface-level stats in the world, but they are not really indicative of his performance on the mound this year. Currently, Nola ranks in the 62nd percentile or higher in Average Exit Velocity, HardHit% and xERA/xwOBA.
Additionally, his 21.5 K% is not up to his expectations this year, especially considering he ranks in the 75th percentile in Chase Rate. This is a guy who has finished with a K% north of 26% in each of the past six seasons, and now could be a great opportunity to buy low on the right-hander in the strikeout department.
Tigers vs. Phillies Betting Pick
While Nola has only recorded eight or more strikeouts once this season, this game is still a good opportunity to buy low on him, especially against this swing-happy Detroit lineup. Through three career starts against the Tigers, he is 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA.
Across 32 career plate appearances against Nola, this current Detroit roster possesses a 22 K% and 34 Whiff%. We saw Michael Kopech mow down this Tigers lineup with nine strikeouts on Sunday, and a similar result could be in store tonight.
Pick: Aaron Nola Over 7.5 Strikeouts (+100 or Better) |
