Seattle Mariners Betting Preview

The rare wrap-around series will conclude on Monday afternoon as the Mariners look to force a series split with George Kirby on the mound.

Kirby has seemingly flown under the radar a bit this season, despite being his usual consistent self. Through 19 starts, he holds a 3.57 ERA and 3.58xFIP.

An arm slot adjustment has raised Kirby’s nearly perfect walk rate from just 3.0% to 5.2% this year, but he still has some of the best command in the game.

He never had an elite strikeout rate, and it has dropped to a career low this season, which is a concern. However, his increased sweeper usage has resulted in a much higher groundball rate.

Thank god for Seattle’s pitching consistency, because its offense has been one of the biggest disappointments of the season. The Mariners rank 28th in scoring and are 27th in team OPS. They have one of the lowest team averages and are extremely reliant on home runs to produce anything on offense.

The biggest story has been the drastic drop-off from last year’s AL MVP runner-up, Cal Raleigh. The Big Dumper has been producing poo poo this season, batting just .165 with a .569 OPS.

Julio Rodriguez and Josh Naylor are also really underproducing in the middle of this order. Dominic Canzone and Randy Arozarena are the only two players with an OPS above .740.

Texas Rangers Betting Preview

Former top-10 draft Pick Kumar Rocker is having an interesting second season in the big leagues. His 3-8 record and 4.13 ERA are certainly nothing to write home about. However, I have watched him a few times this season where he has looked brilliant. The stuff is certainly there.

Rocker throws a fastball in the high 90s, paired with a devastating slider that has racked up a 40% strikeout rate this season.

His slider is truly nasty. The problem is that he often puts himself behind the eight ball with early command issues and high pitch counts.

Much like Seattle, the Rangers have also really underperformed at the plate. Texas ranks 22nd in scoring on the year and has actually been much worse at home. Injuries and inconsistency have killed this team all season.

Also, Young core pieces Wyatt Langford and Evan Carter have not turned the corner the way Texas has needed them, and Corey Seager has been unable to stay healthy. Josh Jung has been one of the more reliable hitters, but he recently joined Seager on the injured list.

Mariners vs Rangers Pick, Betting Analysis

Kirby is one of the most consistent pitchers in the league. He has completed at least six frames in six straight starts and in 13 of his 19 outings this season. He has elite command and is one of the smartest pitchers in the game. He won’t overpower lineups, but he just knows how to pitch.

Rocker is sort of the opposite of Kirby. He certainly has the stuff to be a dominant pitcher. He has an elite slider and an overpowering fastball. But he is more of a thrower than a pitcher.

He also has a rough time settling into a groove. Rocker has made 17 starts this season and has allowed 16 runs in 17 first innings. Unfortunately, the Rangers offense is not good enough to be able to keep overcoming those early holes he puts them in.

Overall, Seattle has a significant pitching advantage in this matchup with Kirby riding excellent form. He has tossed six consecutive quality starts and should be able to make it seven against a disappointing Texas lineup.

Seattle has been terrible on offense too, but if Rocker struggles in the first frame again and can give the Mariners an early lead, Kirby and Seattle’s bullpen should be able to hold onto it.

However, given the way the Mariners offense has performed this season, -136 is too high of a price to lay on them. This game would be a pass for me unless you can get Seattle closer to the -120 range.

Pick: Pass
