Royals vs Reds MLB Betting Preview

The Cincinnati Reds (30-28) welcome the Kansas City Royals (22-37) to Great American Ball Park on Monday night for a cross-league series opener. Despite sitting two games over .500, the Reds find themselves at the bottom of a highly competitive, loaded NL Central. However, Cincinnati enters this matchup with plenty of wind in its sails, having posted a strong .742 OPS over its last 10 games, capped off by a gritty series-ending win against the Braves.

To keep the momentum rolling, the Reds will hand the ball to rookie sensation Chase Burns. Burns has been nothing short of spectacular, cruising through the first two months of the 2026 season with a sparkling 1.96 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP. Missing bats at a 29% strikeout rate, Burns is firmly planting his flag in the National League Cy Young conversation.

On the flip side, the 2026 campaign has quickly unraveled for Kansas City. The Royals arrive in Cincinnati riding a brutal six-game losing streak and sitting 15 games under .500. Compounding their misery, ace Cole Ragans suffered a setback during his minor-league rehab assignment, forcing manager Matt Quatraro to adjust on the fly.

The Royals will lean on 24-year-old right-hander Luinder Avila to make a spot start. Avila has dynamic velocity—touching 98 mph with his sinking fastball—but his command has been highly volatile, evidenced by a bloated 1.83 WHIP and a 12.6% walk rate. Having thrown only 67 pitches in his last multi-inning relief appearance, Avila isn't built for a deep workload, meaning a struggling Royals bullpen (4.54 team ERA) will likely have to log heavy innings.

Royals vs Reds Pick, Betting Analysis

Our PRO Projections system has identified a major edge in the player prop market for Monday's matchup with Cincinnati's breakout outfielder JJ Bleday.

Bleday's .784 slugging percentage against righties means he is actively hunting extra bases every time a right-hander takes the mound. On Monday, he gets a premier matchup against Avila, a conventional righty whose secondary stuff is still under development.

Avila relies heavily on a high-velocity sinker and a hard curveball, but his execution leaves plenty to be desired. Statcast data reveals a concerning 4.74 xERA and an elevated 9.5% barrel rate for Avila this season. Left-handed hitters have historically given him trouble when he fails to locate his changeup, allowing hitters to comfortably sit on his mid-90s fastballs.

With Avila struggling to find the strike zone consistently, Bleday should find himself in highly favorable hitter's counts where he can unleash his fluid stroke.

Pick: JJ Bleday Over 0.5 Doubles
