The San Diego Padres rebounded from consecutive blowout losses as they rallied past the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, 6-4.
These teams play the rubber match in Arlington on Thursday afternoon and the Rangers are favored in the series finale as they turn to future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer.
Rangers vs Padres odds for Thursday have the Rangers as -120 moneyline favorites with an over/under of 7.5 (-105o /-115u). I'm targeting the first five innings for my bet, so let's get to my Rangers vs Padres prediction.
The Padres were outscored 11-1 in a pair of losses to the Red Sox and Rangers, which came on the heels of a 9-1 stretch.
San Diego built a 2-0 lead Wednesday before Texas stormed back with four unanswered runs. The Padres then plated four straight runs over a three-inning stretch for the 6-4 triumph, which included David Peralta's go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning.
Michael King has produced better road than home numbers this season as the San Diego right-hander owns a 2.84 ERA away from Petco Park. King has allowed one more earned run on the road than at home, even though the former Yankee has pitched nearly 14 more innings away from Petco.
King grabbed his first victory since June 7 in last Saturday's 11-1 blowout of Boston as a +125 underdog. In six innings, King yielded one run and five hits, marking his third consecutive road outing in which he has given up one run.
From a strikeout prop perspective, King has hit the over in eight of his past 10 starts, including in three of his past four away outings. In his past four trips to the mound, he has seen strikeout totals of 5.5 three times and a 6.5 one. Each time, he's cashed the over.
Max Scherzer is set to make his third start of the season after missing most of the first three months rehabbing from back surgery.
Scherzer was brought to Texas at the trade deadline last season, but made just eight starts before getting hurt in September. The three-time Cy Young Award winner wasn't overly dominant in his playoff appearances, but did start in one of the Rangers' World Series victories against Arizona.
Fast forward to this season and Scherzer is looking like the Mad Max of old, allowing two earned runs in 10 1/3 innings.
Scherzer pitched well at Baltimore last Friday, but didn't receive help from his offense in a 2-1 defeat.
In two matchups with the Padres last season, Scherzer — as a member of the Mets — split those games with dramatically different results. At Citi Field in early April, Scherzer tossed five scoreless innings in a 5-0 victory. However, he was tagged for five runs in five innings in a 6-2 setback in San Diego.
Rangers vs. Padres
Betting Pick & Prediction
The Rangers are riding an 8-0-1 mark in the first five innings in their past nine home series finales and haven't allowed a run in the first five innings seven times over that stretch.
Scherzer is finding his way back to his old form and doesn't need to go the entire way for an F5 win, while the Padres haven't led through five innings in five straight road series finales.
Let's back Texas at -0.5 in the first five innings on the Fourth of July.
Pick: Rangers F5 -0.5 (+102) | Play to -105 |
