Phillies vs Dodgers Expert MLB Pick

I'm back to finish off this three-game set between the Phillies and the Dodgers after Roki Sasaki came through in a big way, sailing over his strikeout prop.

With warm weather and winds expected to blow out to right-center, the market has taken a clear stance on this matchup. We've seen the total rise from its opening number of 8.5, and normally that is a peculiar move when Yoshinobu Yamamoto is on the mound.

However, it is a strong indication of the Dodgers' expected offensive success against Phillies rookie starter Andrew Painter. Painter was once a top pitching prospect in baseball, but injuries delayed his initial rise to the majors, as he did not pitch in 2023 or 2024.

While he returned to the game last year, he was nowhere near as dominant in the minors as he was prior to being injured.

Since returning in 2025, we've seen a steep drop-off in strikeout rate and a rise in his walk rate at all levels. Walks have not been a huge issue in his nine big-league starts this season, but getting ahead of hitters has been. FanGraphs has his first-pitch strike rate at just 60.1%, below league average.

Falling behind a lineup like the one he'll face this afternoon will make an already uphill battle even harder. The Dodgers lead the majors in wRC+ and have the third-lowest chase rate in the league.

Painter's elite chase rate is what's saved him thus far, but with it unlikely to work against Los Angeles, the Dodgers are likely to create traffic and cash in on him the first two times through the order.

It may not stop with Painter, either, as the Phillies' bullpen is in a tough spot after last night's usage. Many of the arms that Don Mattingly could rely on for more than three outs to get his team through the middle innings are going to be pitching on back-to-back days, and the higher-leverage arms will not be used in a losing game script.

Look for the Dodgers to pile it on the Phillies and close out this series with a crooked number on the scoreboard, going over their team total.

Pick: Dodgers Team Total Over 4.5 (-140, DraftKings)
