The defending World Series champion Texas Rangers have endured plenty of struggles this season, but judging by their last two games, they seem to be back in title form for the time being. The Rangers rolled past the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday night in Baltimore, and then smacked around Dylan Cease and the San Diego Padres in Tuesday's 7-0 home rout in the series opener at Globe Life Field.
San Diego has gone through a roller-coaster ride over the last four games by outscoring Boston, 20-3, in the first two wins at Fenway Park, but the Padres have been limited to one run in their last two losses.
The Padres have fought their way back into the NL Wild Card race, although they still trail the Dodgers by 8.5 games in the NL West.
San Diego had won nine of 10 games before consecutive losses at Boston and Texas as the Padres' offense has fizzled out.
The Padres went through that hot stretch averaging 7.3 runs a game but were shut out on Tuesday for the first time since May 24 against the Yankees.
San Diego turns to rookie right-hander Adam Mazur on Wednesday night as the former University of Iowa standout seeks his first career road victory.
Mazur has received plenty of run support lately, with the Padres scoring seven and six runs in his last two starts, respectively. San Diego beat Washington and Milwaukee at home, although Mazur allowed 11 hits and seven runs across 9 2/3 innings of work.
Mazur has issued 10 walks across 9 2/3 innings in two road outings, as the Padres lost to the Angels and Mets.
Mazur has also failed to hit the over on his strikeout props this season, with the Under cashing four times, while no number was listed in his debut against the Angels.
It's a bit of hyperbole that the Rangers are back to title contenders, but Texas should feel good about themselves after the last two performances to improve to 39-46.
Texas still needs to get back into the AL Wild Card race. The Rangers have a better run differential than the Rays, Cardinals, Giants, and Diamondbacks, all teams with better records than Bruce Bochy's squad.
The Rangers look for their sixth consecutive home win on Wednesday as they hand the ball to Jon Gray, who is making his first start against the Padres since 2021 as a member of the Rockies.
Gray has put together two of his worst starts of the season in his last three trips to the mound. The Mets ripped apart the righty on June 17 (3 IP, 9 ER, 11 H), eventually beating the Rangers 14-2.
Gray rebounded with six scoreless innings in a 6-0 win over the Royals, but things went backward in his most recent outing, an 11-2 rout at Baltimore, by yielding eight runs in five innings.
The one stat that sticks out regarding Gray is the number of unders he has cashed in the first five innings this season. Texas games have finished under the total in the first five innings in 11 of Gray's last 13 starts, including a 6-1 under mark in the past seven games in Arlington.
Padres vs. Rangers
Betting Pick & Prediction
Despite the Padres getting roughed up in the last two games, they are a good look tonight.
Mazur has received good run support and should break through on the road.
Gray has been wildly inconsistent since returning from the IL by splitting four starts, which includes a road win over the Dodgers.
Let's back the Padres here to get back on track in the underdog role tonight.
