Phillies vs. Tigers
Spencer Turnbull will get a chance to make his seventh start of the season this afternoon. Turnbull began the year in the rotation and was excellent. However, once Ranger Suarez got fully healthy, he was bumped to the bullpen.
Since then, Turnbull has struggled in relief work, but a return to the bump in the first inning may be just what he needs to get back on track. Plus, his strikeout line is nowhere near what he showed us earlier in the season.
Turnbull struck out at least six batters in five of his six starts, and now he faces a Detroit Tigers lineup with the seventh-highest strikeout rate against righties this season.
If we get five innings from Turnbull here, he should cruise over this total.
Pick: Spencer Turnbull Over 3.5 Strikeouts (+115)
Guardians vs. Orioles
Next, we head to Cleveland, where this series between the Orioles and Guardians has been a slugfest. However, that will change tonight when Grayson Rodriguez takes the mound for Baltimore.
Rodriguez has made many improvements in his sophomore season and has become a bona fide big-league starter. A big part of his success is generating swings and misses, which he has done at an elite level this year.
Rodriguez ranks in the 80th percentile in swinging strike rate, leading to his rank in the 78th percentile in strikeout rate. He can punch guys out with the best of them, yet his strikeout prop sits at just 4.5 for this matchup.
His matchup is being overrated. Yes, the Guardians rank 29th in strikeout rate against righties, but this number makes it seem like they're impervious to striking out.
Rodriguez has exceeded this number in 85% of his starts this season and 76% of his 36 career big-league starts. He's the guy to back in Cleveland tonight.
Pick: Grayson Rodriguez Over 4.5 Strikeouts (-139)
Twins vs. Diamondbacks
Lastly, we head to Arizona, where Ryne Nelson will take the mound against the Minnesota Twins. Nelson has had a rough 2024 campaign, entering this outing with a 5.18 ERA and 1.51 WHIP.
He doesn't miss many bats, ranking in the eighth percentile in CSW. That has led to a bevy of hard contact against him, and we should see more of that tonight against this Minnesota lineup.
The Twins have quietly been one of the better hitting teams in baseball, especially as of late. Over their last 15 games, they rank first in wRC+ and second in OBP against righties.
Given that they'll put the ball in play with authority against Nelson, we should see him exit before the sixth inning. That has been the norm for him this year, as Nelson has gone under this total in eight of his 13 starts.
