The San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers open a huge (for the Padres) three-game series Tuesday night in San Diego. Although the Dodgers have claimed the NL West title, the Padres are still aiming to secure their place in the postseason.
The Padres are clinging to the second wild card position in the National League, but the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers can still throw a wrench in the Padres' playoff plans.
Blake Snell will get the start for the Padres as he hopes to help pad the Padres' playoff chances. Tyler Anderson will be on the hill for the Dodgers, and he looks to build upon his stellar 2022 season.
Both teams are 7-3 over their last 10 games in what could be the game of the night.
No Slowing for Los Angeles Dodgers
Although the Dodgers have locked up the NL West, they will not be taking their foot off the gas pedal.
As mentioned, they are 7-3 over their last 10 games, but they are also coming off a series victory against the presumed NL Central champions, the St. Louis Cardinals.
However, the Dodgers have not been particularly strong against left-handed pitching on the road over the past month. In fact, they are only 23rd in team wRC+ (73) over that stretch, and their peripherals don't look like they are due for positive regression either.
Speaking of peripherals, Tyler Anderson has had a great 2022 season, but he seems to be due for regression in his own right. Despite his 2.86 road ERA, his 3.53 FIP and 4.36 xFIP mean he may be overdue for some road regression.
Snell to Help San Diego Padres Rebound?
Snell has had an up-and-down 2022, but he has put together an excellent September.
So far in September, he's posted a 2.63 ERA with a 1.49 FIP. This includes a bad start. At home. Against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
But perhaps he can make the necessary adjustments to continue on the roll he's on.
The Padres offense has also consistently fared well against LHP at home this season. Although over the last 30 days, they've only had the 16th best team wRC+ against lefties at home, and they have still posted a 116 mark, which is really good.
Dodgers-Padres Pick
Considering the moneylines are at -108 apiece, the oddsmakers do not feel that either team has a clear edge. However, the Padres offense at home against Anderson has some appeal to me considering that the pitcher may be the beneficiary of some road luck this season.
While Snell did get knocked around by the Dodgers recently in a home start, he's still in the midst of another dominant stretch, and his hot hand could give some value to the Padres.
Considering both teams are looking to make a statement this series and this could be a potential playoff preview, Snell has the big-game experience and favorable numbers heading into Tuesday.
Some books have the Padres F5 runline of -0.5 at +125 odds, and that could be the sneaky plus money play of this matchup. Play this as long as it's in plus money.
