Sean Paul’s Marlins vs Pirates Preview
Do the Pirates have another burgeoning young arm?
It could be the case with Mike Burrows, who twirled five scoreless innings with six strikeouts in a win over Houston in his last outing. Preceding that outing, Burrows allowed nine earned runs in his first 8 1/3 major league innings.
I'm not sure I'm buying Burrows' outing versus Houston. He still sports a rough 5.27 ERA and 5.41 FIP, while punching out just 7.24 batters per nine.
Nothing about Burrows' four-pitch mix jumps off the page. He averages 94.9 mph on his four-seamer and he has a 94 Stuff+, which is a tad underwhelming and not the makeup of a long-term starter.
The Pirates swept the Phillies, but they scored just four runs in the last two games. That's not a huge surprise, as Pittsburgh's poor offense ranks 24th in MLB with a 90 wRC+ since May 15.
The concern here is that the Pirates strike out 24.4% of the time and have just 15 home runs in their last 21 games.
Bryan Reynolds finally looks like himself, posting a dazzling 169 wRC+ in that span. They have three other players with a wRC+ above 100 (Oneil Cruz, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Andrew McCutchen).
After that? Nobody has a wRC+ better than 65. If the top of the order fails to carry the weight, then it's a tough road ahead.
Welcome back, Eury Perez!
The former top prospect is back after missing the last year and a half with an elbow injury. As a 20-year-old rookie in 2023, Perez posted a 3.15 ERA with a 10.64 K/9 in 91 1/3 innings. Striking out that many batters for anybody is impressive. But for a 20-year-old? That's unreal.
It was more of the same for Perez during his eight rehab outings. He threw 22 2/3 innings and punched out 10.72 per nine, but with a concerning 3.97 BB/9.
The 6-foot-8 hurler regularly throws in the high 90s to 100 mph range, but the occasional command issues and frequent hunting for strikeouts can steal the show from his elite stuff. Facing a strikeout prone Pirates offense is an ideal matchup for Perez.
The Marlins' offense hasn't been very good of late. They have a 99 wRC since May 15, ranking 19th in MLB.
Miami also doesn't hit for power, hitting just 13 homers in its last 20 games. That makes sense given the Marlins' makeup — Dane Myers and Xavier Edwards are two of their best hitters but are contact-first (three home runs combined between the two).
It's a trade-off, though. Prioritizing contact over power also leads to an elite 18.4% strikeout rate.
Jesus Sanchez has been a crusher lately, posting an elite 171 wRC+ with a .977 OPS and four home runs. He and young catcher Agustin Ramirez are the two sources of power in Miami's lineup.
Marlins vs Pirates Picks and Predictions
I'll gladly fade Burrows here while backing Perez, who I view as a legitimate Cy Young contender in the future.
Maybe it'll take time for Perez to get there, but the talent is undeniable. The Pirates beating a reeling Phillies team also overvalues them a bit.
Burrows was totally uncompetitive in two of his three big league outings. If it weren't for the Pirates' miracle comeback win against the Diamondbacks, they'd be 1-2 in his starts.
Also, it's clear interim manager Don Kelly has limited trust in the 25-year-old, as he pulled him after 70 pitches against Houston.
The Astros tallied six hits against him and didn't make him pay. The Marlins' contact approach against Burrows' low-strikeout rate will lead to a plethora of balls in play.
In contrast, Perez should have the free-swinging Pirates off-balance from the jump.
