Dodgers vs Mets MLB Betting Preview
The Dodgers have an absurd amount of rotation injuries. First, it was Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow, who you can usually chalk up to missing a few months a year. Now, Shohei Ohtani’s nagging knee problems will sideline him as a pitcher for now.
That raises the importance of someone like Emmet Sheehan, who draws the start in Sunday’s series finale from Queens. Sheehan has a rough 5.13 ERA, but he's been unlucky. He should get positive regression soon enough, as his xERA is 3.89 and his FIP is 4.50.
Sheehan is a strikeout artist, punching out a strong 10.16 K/9. The biggest issue plaguing Sheehan is the long ball. He gives up 1.75 HR/9, which is double from last season. Given that Sheehan is a fly-ball pitcher, teams will have chances to hit the ball out. If he irons out that issue, he could have a great outing here.
The Dodgers' offense is having one of its toughest stretches of the season. In July, they rank 23rd in MLB with a 90 wRC+. Their plate approach has remained elite, boasting a 9% walk rate and 21% strikeout rate.
The issue is a power outage, as the Dodgers have just 18 homers in 19 games this month. Shohei Ohtani has four homers in July, but his wRC+ is 95. This lineup has tons of talent from top to bottom, but Ohtani sets the tone. Once he gets going, expect the dominant Dodgers to start scoring runs again.
On the mound for the Mets is Freddy Peralta, whose brutal career as a Met could be close to over. New York has to be hoping for a strong start to boost his trade value. He owns a 5.01 ERA with a 3.86 xERA and 4.51 FIP.
Here's why I feel worse about Peralta turning his season around than I do about Sheehan: Peralta has a 9.03 K/9, the worst of his career by far, and a 3.78 BB/9 (worst since 2019). With all the walks and strikeouts, Peralta throws a ton of pitches, which is why he went fewer than five innings in four of his last six starts.
The Dodgers' patient approach should lead to another short outing from Peralta.
On the lineup front, the Mets endured a brutal blow this weekend, as Juan Soto hit the injured list with a nagging calf issue. The Mets were already a bad team with Soto. How bad is the falloff without their best hitter? Replacing a 159 wRC+ bat won't be very easy.
In July, four Mets regulars other than Soto have a wRC+ better than 100. Francisco Lindor is finally hitting well, posting a 116 wRC+ in his last 19 games. The boost from rookies Carson Benge and AJ Ewing has also been pivotal.
What the Mets could use is Bo Bichette living up to his contract. He has an 87 wRC+ in his first season in Queens. With Soto out, Bichette could clear his name with the upset Met fans over his uneven start.

Dodgers vs Mets Pick, Betting Analysis
I'll take the Dodgers -1.5 here at +102. The Mets are one of the worst teams in the league — and that was with Soto, who is one of the great hitters in baseball. Without him, you can downgrade this Mets lineup, and Sheehan could thrive against a team that lacks home run power.
I also view this as a poor matchup for Peralta. The Dodgers rarely chase and will make Peralta stay in the strike zone.
Pick: Dodgers -1.5 (Play to -110)
